Therefore, I will again confound these people with wonder after wonder. The wisdom of their wise will vanish, and the perception of their perceptive will be hidden.

After Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of King Herod, wise men from the east arrived in Jerusalem,

When they say to you,“ Inquire of the mediums and the spiritists who chirp and mutter,” shouldn’t a people inquire of their God? Should they inquire of the dead on behalf of the living?

“ Do not turn to mediums or consult spiritists, or you will be defiled by them; I am the LORD your God.

I had a dream, and it frightened me; while in my bed, the images and visions in my mind alarmed me.

Then Daniel, whose name is Belteshazzar, was stunned for a moment, and his thoughts alarmed him. The king said,“ Belteshazzar, don’t let the dream or its interpretation alarm you.” Belteshazzar answered,“ My lord, may the dream apply to those who hate you, and its interpretation to your enemies!

The magicians tried to produce gnats using their occult practices, but they could not. The gnats remained on people and animals.“ This is the finger of God,” the magicians said to Pharaoh. But Pharaoh’s heart was hard, and he would not listen to them, as the LORD had said.

“ When you enter the land the LORD your God is giving you, do not imitate the detestable customs of those nations.No one among you is to sacrifice his son or daughter in the fire, practice divination, tell fortunes, interpret omens, practice sorcery,cast spells, consult a medium or a spiritist, or inquire of the dead.Everyone who does these acts is detestable to the LORD, and the LORD your God is driving out the nations before you because of these detestable acts.You must be blameless before the LORD your God.Though these nations you are about to drive out listen to fortune-tellers and diviners, the LORD your God has not permitted you to do this.

Some of the Epicurean and Stoic philosophers also debated with him. Some said,“ What is this ignorant show-off trying to say?” Others replied,“ He seems to be a preacher of foreign deities”— because he was telling the good news about Jesus and the resurrection.

Egypt’s spirit will be disturbed within it, and I will frustrate its plans. Then they will inquire of worthless idols, ghosts, mediums, and spiritists.

“ This is the end of the account. As for me, Daniel, my thoughts terrified me greatly, and my face turned pale, but I kept the matter to myself.”

But the magicians did the same thing by their occult practices and brought frogs up onto the land of Egypt.

Daniel answered the king,“ No wise man, medium, magician, or diviner is able to make known to the king the mystery he asked about.But there is a God in heaven who reveals mysteries, and he has let King Nebuchadnezzar know what will happen in the last days. Your dream and the visions that came into your mind as you lay in bed were these:

I, Daniel, was overcome and lay sick for days. Then I got up and went about the king’s business. I was greatly disturbed by the vision and could not understand it.

Let no one deceive himself. If anyone among you thinks he is wise in this age, let him become a fool so that he can become wise.For the wisdom of this world is foolishness with God, since it is written, He catches the wise in their craftiness;and again, The Lord knows that the reasonings of the wise are futile.

In the second year of his reign, Nebuchadnezzar had dreams that troubled him, and sleep deserted him.So the king gave orders to summon the magicians, mediums, sorcerers, and Chaldeans to tell the king his dreams. When they came and stood before the king,he said to them,“ I have had a dream and am anxious to understand it.”The Chaldeans spoke to the king( Aramaic begins here):“ May the king live forever. Tell your servants the dream, and we will give the interpretation.”The king replied to the Chaldeans,“ My word is final: If you don’t tell me the dream and its interpretation, you will be torn limb from limb, and your houses will be made a garbage dump.But if you make the dream and its interpretation known to me, you’ll receive gifts, a reward, and great honor from me. So make the dream and its interpretation known to me.”They answered a second time,“ May the king tell the dream to his servants, and we will make known the interpretation.”The king replied,“ I know for certain you are trying to gain some time, because you see that my word is final.If you don’t tell me the dream, there is one decree for you. You have conspired to tell me something false or fraudulent until the situation changes. So tell me the dream and I will know you can give me its interpretation.”The Chaldeans answered the king,“ No one on earth can make known what the king requests. Consequently, no king, however great and powerful, has ever asked anything like this of any magician, medium, or Chaldean.What the king is asking is so difficult that no one can make it known to him except the gods, whose dwelling is not with mortals.”

For it is written, I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, and I will set aside the intelligence of the intelligent.

When Joseph came to them in the morning, he saw that they looked distraught.

There is a man in your kingdom who has a spirit of the holy gods in him. In the days of your predecessor he was found to have insight, intelligence, and wisdom like the wisdom of the gods. Your predecessor, King Nebuchadnezzar, appointed him chief of the magicians, mediums, Chaldeans, and diviners. Your own predecessor, the king,

The princes of Zoan are complete fools; Pharaoh’s wisest advisers give stupid advice! How can you say to Pharaoh,“ I am one of the wise, a student of eastern kings”?Where then are your wise men? Let them tell you and reveal what the LORD of Armies has planned against Egypt.The princes of Zoan have been fools; the princes of Memphis are deceived. Her tribal chieftains have led Egypt astray.

So take your stand with your spells and your many sorceries, which you have wearied yourself with from your youth. Perhaps you will be able to succeed; perhaps you will inspire terror!You are worn out with your many consultations. So let the astrologers stand and save you— those who observe the stars, those who predict monthly what will happen to you.

The magicians could not stand before Moses because of the boils, for the boils were on the magicians as well as on all the Egyptians.

“ Whoever turns to mediums or spiritists and prostitutes himself with them, I will turn against that person and cut him off from his people.

He frustrates the schemes of the crafty so that they achieve no success.He traps the wise in their craftiness so that the plans of the deceptive are quickly brought to an end.

The secret counsel of the LORD is for those who fear him, and he reveals his covenant to them.

So Moses was educated in all the wisdom of the Egyptians and was powerful in his speech and actions.

“ We had dreams,” they said to him,“ but there is no one to interpret them.” Then Joseph said to them,“ Don’t interpretations belong to God? Tell me your dreams.”
