第三天，以斯帖身穿朝服进入王宫内院，面对大殿站立，王在殿里正面朝宫门坐在宝座上。

扫罗的孙子米非波设也来迎接王。从王离开那天，直到大卫平安回来之日，他没有修过脚，没有剃过胡子，也没有洗过衣服。

末底改得知这事，就撕裂衣服，披上麻衣，头蒙灰尘，在城中行走，放声痛哭，一直走到宫门前才停住，因为穿麻衣的不可进宫门。王的命令和谕旨传到各省，各地的犹太人极其悲伤，他们禁食、哭泣、哀号，许多人身披麻衣躺在灰中。以斯帖王后的宫女和太监把这事禀告她，她非常难过，便为末底改送去衣服，让他换下麻衣，他却不肯接受。

法老急忙召见摩西和亚伦，对他们说：“我得罪了你们的上帝耶和华，又得罪了你们。

我因耶和华而无比喜乐，因我的上帝而心里快乐，因为祂给我穿上救恩的衣服、披上公义的袍子，使我像戴上华冠的新郎，又像戴上饰物的新娘。
