Then Judah said to Er’s brother Onan,“ Go and marry Tamar, as our law requires of the brother of a man who has died. You must produce an heir for your brother.”

于是犹大对俄南说：“你去与你哥哥的妻子亲近，向她尽你作弟弟的本分，替你的哥哥立后。”

犹大对俄南说：“你当与你哥哥的妻子同房，向她尽小叔子的义务，为你的哥哥立后。”

猶大對俄南說：「你當與你哥哥的妻子同房，向她盡你為弟的本分，為你哥哥生子立後。」

猶大對俄南說：「你當與你哥哥的妻子同房，向她盡你的本分，為你哥哥生子立後。」

猶大對俄南說：「你當與你哥哥的妻子同房，向她盡你的本分，為你哥哥生子立後。」

猶大對俄南說：「你要與哥哥的妻子她瑪同房，向她盡你做弟弟的本分，好替你哥哥傳宗接代。」

於是猶大對俄南說：“你去與你哥哥的妻子親近，向她盡你作弟弟的本分，替你的哥哥立後。”

猶大對俄南說：『你要進去找你哥哥的妻子，向她盡你做弟弟的本分，為你哥哥樹立後裔。』

猶大對俄南說：「你當與你哥哥的妻子同房，向她盡小叔子的義務，為你的哥哥立後。」

猶大命俄南曰、汝其與嫂同室、以盡弟分、生子嗣兄、

猶大命阿楠曰、當與嫂同室、生子以嗣兄。

猶大命阿南曰、當與兄妻同室、生子以嗣兄、

Then Judah said to Onan,“ Sleep with your brother’s wife and fulfill your duty to her as a brother- in- law to raise up offspring for your brother.”

Then Judah said to Onan,“ Sleep with your brother’s wife. After all, you are her brother- in- law. So carry out your duty to her. Provide children for your brother.”

Then Judah said to Onan,“ Go in to your brother’s wife and perform the duty of a brother-in-law to her, and raise up offspring for your brother.”

Then Judah said to Onan,“ Sleep with your brother’s wife. Perform your duty as her brother-in-law and produce offspring for your brother.”

Then Judah said to Onan,“ Have relations with your brother’s wife and perform your duty as a brother in law to her, and raise up a child for your brother.”

And Judah said to Onan,“ Go in to your brother’s wife and marry her, and raise up an heir to your brother.”

And Judah said unto Onan, Go in unto thy brother’s wife, and perform the duty of a husband’s brother unto her, and raise up seed to thy brother.

Then Judah said to Onan,“ Sleep with your brother’s wife. Perform your duty as her brother-in-law and produce offspring for your brother.”

And Judah said unto Onan, Go in unto thy brother’s wife, and marry her, and raise up seed to thy brother.

Then Judah said to Onan,“ Have sexual relations with your brother’s wife and fulfill the duty of a brother-in-law to her so that you may raise up a descendant for your brother.”

Judah said to Onan,“ Go in to your brother’s wife, and perform the duty of a husband’s brother to her, and raise up offspring for your brother.”

That same day Jesus was approached by some Sadducees— religious leaders who say there is no resurrection from the dead. They posed this question:“ Teacher, Moses said,‘ If a man dies without children, his brother should marry the widow and have a child who will carry on the brother’s name.’Well, suppose there were seven brothers. The oldest one married and then died without children, so his brother married the widow.But the second brother also died, and the third brother married her. This continued with all seven of them.Last of all, the woman also died.

But Naomi replied,“ Why should you go on with me? Can I still give birth to other sons who could grow up to be your husbands?

“ Do not have sexual relations with your brother’s wife, for this would violate your brother.

Then Boaz told him,“ Of course, your purchase of the land from Naomi also requires that you marry Ruth, the Moabite widow. That way she can have children who will carry on her husband’s name and keep the land in the family.”“ Then I can’t redeem it,” the family redeemer replied,“ because this might endanger my own estate. You redeem the land; I cannot do it.”Now in those days it was the custom in Israel for anyone transferring a right of purchase to remove his sandal and hand it to the other party. This publicly validated the transaction.So the other family redeemer drew off his sandal as he said to Boaz,“ You buy the land.”Then Boaz said to the elders and to the crowd standing around,“ You are witnesses that today I have bought from Naomi all the property of Elimelech, Kilion, and Mahlon.And with the land I have acquired Ruth, the Moabite widow of Mahlon, to be my wife. This way she can have a son to carry on the family name of her dead husband and to inherit the family property here in his hometown. You are all witnesses today.”Then the elders and all the people standing in the gate replied,“ We are witnesses! May the Lord make this woman who is coming into your home like Rachel and Leah, from whom all the nation of Israel descended! May you prosper in Ephrathah and be famous in Bethlehem.

The daughters throughout the tribes of Israel who are in line to inherit property must marry within their tribe, so that all the Israelites will keep their ancestral property.No grant of land may pass from one tribe to another; each tribe of Israel must keep its allotted portion of land.”

“ If two brothers are living together on the same property and one of them dies without a son, his widow may not be married to anyone from outside the family. Instead, her husband’s brother should marry her and have intercourse with her to fulfill the duties of a brother in law.The first son she bears to him will be considered the son of the dead brother, so that his name will not be forgotten in Israel.“ But if the man refuses to marry his brother’s widow, she must go to the town gate and say to the elders assembled there,‘ My husband’s brother refuses to preserve his brother’s name in Israel— he refuses to fulfill the duties of a brother in law by marrying me.’The elders of the town will then summon him and talk with him. If he still refuses and says,‘ I don’t want to marry her,’the widow must walk over to him in the presence of the elders, pull his sandal from his foot, and spit in his face. Then she must declare,‘ This is what happens to a man who refuses to provide his brother with children.’Ever afterward in Israel his family will be referred to as‘ the family of the man whose sandal was pulled off’!
