因為我們從前也是無知、悖逆、受了迷惑，做各種私慾和宴樂的奴僕，在惡毒和嫉妒中度生活，滿有恨心，彼此相恨。

無緣無故恨我的、比我的頭髮還多；施欺詐與我為仇的、比我的骨頭強盛；我沒有搶奪的、難道我必須償還麼？

卻沒看中該隱和該隱的供物。該隱就極其惱怒，變了臉色。

他哥哥們都嫉妒他；他父親卻把這事記住。

耶西就打發人去領他來：他臉色赤紅：雙目清秀，丰采俊美。永恆主說：『這一個就是了；你起來膏他。』撒母耳就拿了油角，在他哥哥們中間膏了他；從那一天起、永恆主的靈就大大感動大衛。於是撒母耳起身、往拉瑪去了。

『世界若恨你們，你們該知道在恨你們以先、它已經恨了我了。你們若屬於世界，世界就必愛屬自己的；只因你們不屬於世界，乃是我揀選了你們出世界，故此世界恨你們。

但那無緣無故做我仇敵的很強盛；那施欺詐恨我的又直增多着。

約瑟做了一個夢，告訴他的哥哥們，他們就更加恨他。

耶穌的弟兄就對耶穌說：『你離開這裏，上猶太去吧，讓你的門徒在那裏也看看你所作的事啊。因為沒有人在隱密中作事、而尋求公開顯揚的。你既作這些事，就該將自己向世人顯明出來啊。』（原來連他弟兄也不信他。）

他們從遠處看見他，趁他還沒走近，大家就設詭計謀害他、要殺死他。彼此說：『你看，那做夢的來了。來吧！我們將他殺了，丟在這麼一個坑裏，就說有惡獸把他喫了；且看他的夢要怎麼樣。』如便聽見了，就要援救他脫離他們的手；他說：『我們不可擊殺他的性命。』如便對他們說：『不可流他的血；把他丟在野地這個坑裏；不可伸手害他。』如便的意思是要援救他脫離他們的手，然後把他送回給他父親。約瑟到了他哥哥們那裏，他們就剝下約瑟的褂子，就是他穿在身上那件有袖子的長褂，把約瑟丟在坑裏。那坑子是空的，裏面沒有水。
