我們從前也是無知、悖逆、受迷惑、服事各樣私慾，和宴樂，常存惡毒嫉妒的心，是可恨的，又是彼此相恨。

無故恨我的，比我頭髮還多；無理與我為仇、要把我剪除的，甚為強盛。我沒有搶奪的，要叫我償還。

只是看不中該隱和他的供物。該隱就大大地發怒，變了臉色。

他哥哥們都嫉妒他，他父親卻把這話存在心裏。

耶西就打發人去叫了他來。他面色光紅，雙目清秀，容貌俊美。耶和華說：「這就是他，你起來膏他。」撒母耳就用角裏的膏油，在他諸兄中膏了他。從這日起，耶和華的靈就大大感動大衛。撒母耳起身回拉瑪去了。

「世人若恨你們，你們知道，恨你們以先已經恨我了。你們若屬世界，世界必愛屬自己的；只因你們不屬世界，乃是我從世界中揀選了你們，所以世界就恨你們。

但我的仇敵又活潑又強壯，無理恨我的增多了。

約瑟做了一夢，告訴他哥哥們，他們就越發恨他。

耶穌的弟兄就對他說：「你離開這裏上猶太去吧，叫你的門徒也看見你所行的事。人要顯揚名聲，沒有在暗處行事的；你如果行這些事，就當將自己顯明給世人看。」因為連他的弟兄說這話，是因為不信他。

他們遠遠地看見他，趁他還沒有走到跟前，大家就同謀要害死他，彼此說：「你看！那做夢的來了。來吧！我們將他殺了，丟在一個坑裏，就說有惡獸把他吃了。我們且看他的夢將來怎麼樣。」呂便聽見了，要救他脫離他們的手，說：「我們不可害他的性命」；又說：「不可流他的血，可以把他丟在這野地的坑裏，不可下手害他。」呂便的意思是要救他脫離他們的手，把他歸還他的父親。約瑟到了他哥哥們那裏，他們就剝了他的外衣，就是他穿的那件彩衣，把他丟在坑裏；那坑是空的，裏頭沒有水。
