我們從前也是無知、不順服、受了迷惑、被各種私慾和逸樂所奴役，生活在惡毒和嫉妒之中，是可憎可惡的，並且互相仇視。

那些無故恨我的，比我的頭髮還多；無理與我為敵，要把我滅絕的，人數眾多。我沒有搶奪過的，竟要我償還。

只是沒有看中該隱和他的禮物。該隱就非常忿怒，垂頭喪氣。

他哥哥們都嫉妒他，他父親卻把這事記在心裡。

耶西就派人去把大衛帶回來。他面色紅潤，眼目清秀，外貌英俊。耶和華說：“就是這一個，你起來膏立他吧！”撒母耳就拿起盛油的角，在他的兄長中膏立他。從那天起，耶和華的靈就大大感動大衛。後來撒母耳動身往拉瑪去了。

“如果世人恨你們，你們要知道他們在恨你們以先，已經恨我了。你們若屬於這世界，世人必定愛屬自己的；但因為你們不屬於世界，而是我從世界中揀選了你們，所以世人就恨你們。

但我強悍的仇敵眾多，無理憎恨我的不斷增加。

約瑟作了一個夢，把夢告訴哥哥們，他們就越發恨他。

耶穌的弟弟就對他說：“你應當離開這裡上猶太去，好讓你的門徒也可以看見你所行的事；因為沒有人想引人注目，卻在暗處行事的。你既然行這些事，就應該向世人顯明自己。”原來連他的弟弟也不信他。

他們遠遠就看見了他；趁他還沒有走近，大家就謀害他，要把他殺死。他們彼此說：“看哪，那作夢的人來了。來吧，我們把他殺了，丟在一個枯井裡，就說有猛獸把他吃了。我們要看看他的夢將來要怎麼樣。”流本聽見了，要救約瑟脫離他們的手。他說：“我們不可取他的性命。”流本又對他們說：“不可流他的血，可以把他丟在這曠野的枯井裡，不可下手害他。”流本的意思是要救他脫離他們的手，把他帶回去給他的父親。約瑟到了哥哥們那裡，他們就脫去他的外衣，就是他穿在身上的那件彩衣。他們拿住約瑟，把他丟在枯井裡。那井是空的，裡面沒有水。
