All his sons and daughters came to comfort him, but he refused to be comforted.“ No,” he said,“ I will continue to mourn until I join my son in the grave.” So his father wept for him.

But Jacob said,“ My son shall not go down with you; for his brother is dead, and he alone is left. If harm should happen to him on the journey you are taking, then you will bring my gray hair down to Sheol in sorrow.”

The elders of his household stood beside him in order to help him up from the ground, but he was unwilling and would not eat food with them.

Now when Job’s three friends heard about all this adversity that had come upon him, they came, each one from his own place— Eliphaz the Temanite, Bildad the Shuhite, and Zophar the Naamathite; and they made an appointment together to come to sympathize with him and comfort him.

This is what the Lord says:“ A voice is heard in Ramah, Lamenting and bitter weeping. Rachel is weeping for her children; She refuses to be comforted for her children, Because they are no more.”

In the day of my trouble I sought the Lord; In the night my hand was stretched out and did not grow weary; My soul refused to be comforted.

But we said to him,‘ We are honest men; we are not spies.

Then Israel said,“ It is enough; my son Joseph is still alive. I will go and see him before I die.”

And it came about, while Israel was living in that land, that Reuben went and slept with his father’s concubine Bilhah, and Israel heard about it. Now there were twelve sons of Jacob—the sons of Leah were Reuben, Jacob’s firstborn, then Simeon, Levi, Judah, Issachar, and Zebulun;the sons of Rachel were Joseph and Benjamin;and the sons of Bilhah, Rachel’s female slave, were Dan and Naphtali;and the sons of Zilpah, Leah’s female slave, were Gad and Asher. These were the sons of Jacob who were born to him in Paddan aram.

If you also take this one from me, and harm happens to him, you will bring my gray hair down to Sheol in sorrow.’So now, when I come to your servant, my father, and the boy is not with us— since our father’s life is so attached to the boy’s life—when he sees that the boy is not with us, he will die. So your servants will bring the gray hair of your servant, our father, down to Sheol in sorrow.

Then Laban replied to Jacob,“ The daughters are my daughters, the children are my grandchildren, the flocks are my flocks, and everything that you see is mine. But what can I do this day to these daughters of mine or to their children to whom they have given birth?
