約伯的三個朋友提幔人以利法、書亞人比勒達和拿瑪人瑣法聽到他的不幸遭遇，便各自從家鄉動身，相約一起來探望、安慰他。

耶和華說：「在拉瑪有痛哭哀號的聲音，是拉結在為兒女哀痛，不肯接受安慰，因為他們都死了。」

要是你們把他的弟弟也帶走，遇上什麼意外的話，你們會使我這白髮蒼蒼的老人淒淒慘慘地進墳墓。』「我們父親的命與這孩子的命緊密相連，倘若我沒有把這孩子帶回到你僕人——我父親身邊，他一看這孩子不在，一定會死。僕人們會使自己白髮蒼蒼的父親淒淒慘慘地進墳墓。

拉班回答說：「女兒是我的，這些孩子是我的，羊群也是我的，你的一切都是我的，我又怎會傷害我的女兒和她們的孩子呢？
