For we too were once foolish, disobedient, misled, enslaved to various passions and desires, spending our lives in evil and envy, hateful and hating one another.

So the chief priests planned to kill Lazarus too,for on account of him many of the Jewish people from Jerusalem were going away and believing in Jesus.

for they are eager to inflict harm, and they hasten to shed blood.

They encourage one another to carry out their evil deed. They plan how to hide snares, and boast,“ Who will see them?”

The one who conceals hatred utters lies, and the one who spreads slander is certainly a fool.

saying,“ What should we do with these men? For it is plain to all who live in Jerusalem that a notable miraculous sign has come about through them, and we cannot deny it.But to keep this matter from spreading any further among the people, let us warn them to speak no more to anyone in this name.”And they called them in and ordered them not to speak or teach at all in the name of Jesus.

For we saw his star when it rose and have come to worship him.”When King Herod heard this he was alarmed, and all Jerusalem with him.After assembling all the chief priests and experts in the law, he asked them where the Christ was to be born.“ In Bethlehem of Judea,” they said,“ for it is written this way by the prophet:‘ And you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah,are in no way least among the rulers of Judah,for out of you will come a ruler who will shepherd my people Israel.’”Then Herod privately summoned the wise men and determined from them when the star had appeared.He sent them to Bethlehem and said,“ Go and look carefully for the child. When you find him, inform me so that I can go and worship him as well.”After listening to the king they left, and once again the star they saw when it rose led them until it stopped above the place where the child was.When they saw the star they shouted joyfully.As they came into the house and saw the child with Mary his mother, they bowed down and worshiped him. They opened their treasure boxes and gave him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh.After being warned in a dream not to return to Herod, they went back by another route to their own country.After they had gone, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream and said,“ Get up, take the child and his mother and flee to Egypt, and stay there until I tell you, for Herod is going to look for the child to kill him.”Then he got up, took the child and his mother during the night, and went to Egypt.He stayed there until Herod died. In this way what was spoken by the Lord through the prophet was fulfilled:“ I called my Son out of Egypt.”When Herod saw that he had been tricked by the wise men, he became enraged. He sent men to kill all the children in Bethlehem and throughout the surrounding region from the age of two and under, according to the time he had learned from the wise men.

If I have told you people about earthly things and you don’t believe, how will you believe if I tell you about heavenly things?

As the prophet from Judah was traveling, a lion attacked him on the road and killed him. His corpse was lying on the road, and the donkey and the lion just stood there beside it.

When he turned around and saw them, he called God’s judgment down on them. Two female bears came out of the woods and ripped forty-two of the boys to pieces.

So Saul arose and went down to the desert of Ziph, accompanied by three thousand select men of Israel, to look for David in the desert of Ziph.

and saying,“ You who can destroy the temple and rebuild it in three days, save yourself! If you are God’s Son, come down from the cross!”In the same way even the chief priests– together with the experts in the law and elders– were mocking him:“ He saved others, but he cannot save himself! He is the king of Israel! If he comes down now from the cross, we will believe in him!

Wrath is cruel and anger is overwhelming, but who can stand before jealousy?

If they say,“ Come with us! We will lie in wait to shed blood; we will ambush an innocent person capriciously.We will swallow them alive like Sheol, those full of vigor like those going down to the Pit.

haughty eyes, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood,

The one who covers his transgressions will not prosper, but whoever confesses them and forsakes them will find mercy.

Those who passed by defamed him, shaking their heads and saying,“ Aha! You who can destroy the temple and rebuild it in three days,save yourself and come down from the cross!”In the same way even the chief priests– together with the experts in the law– were mocking him among themselves:“ He saved others, but he cannot save himself!Let the Christ, the king of Israel, come down from the cross now, that we may see and believe!” Those who were crucified with him also spoke abusively to him.

Now look, I realize that you will in fact be king and that the kingdom of Israel will be established in your hand.
