Esau was a skillful hunter, a man of the field. Jacob was a quiet man, living in tents. Now Isaac loved Esau, because he ate his venison. Rebekah loved Jacob.Jacob boiled stew. Esau came in from the field, and he was famished.Esau said to Jacob,“ Please feed me with some of that red stew, for I am famished.” Therefore his name was called Edom.Jacob said,“ First, sell me your birthright.”Esau said,“ Behold, I am about to die. What good is the birthright to me?”Jacob said,“ Swear to me first.” He swore to him. He sold his birthright to Jacob.Jacob gave Esau bread and lentil stew. Bless me, even me also, my father.” Esau lifted up his voice, and wept.Isaac his father answered him,“ Behold, your dwelling will be of the fatness of the earth, and of the dew of the sky from above. You will live by your sword, and you will serve your brother. It will happen, when you will break loose, that you will shake his yoke from off your neck.”Esau hated Jacob because of the blessing with which his father blessed him. Behold, we are in Kadesh, a city in the edge of your border.“ Please let us pass through your land. We will not pass through field or through vineyard, neither will we drink from the water of the wells. We will go along the king’s highway. We will not turn away to the right hand nor to the left, until we have passed your border.”Edom said to him,“ You shall not pass through me, lest I come out with the sword against you.”The children of Israel said to him,“ We will go up by the highway; and if we drink your water, I and my livestock, then I will give its price. Only let me, without doing anything else, pass through on my feet.”He said,“ You shall not pass through.” Edom came out against him with many people, and with a strong hand. Thus Edom refused to give Israel passage through his border, so Israel turned away from him.
