When her days to give birth were completed, behold, there were twins in her womb. The first came out red, all his body like a hairy cloak, so they called his name Esau.Afterward his brother came out with his hand holding Esau’s heel, so his name was called Jacob. Isaac was sixty years old when she bore them. When the boys grew up, Esau was a skillful hunter, a man of the field, while Jacob was a quiet man, dwelling in tents.Isaac loved Esau because he ate of his game, but Rebekah loved Jacob.Once when Jacob was cooking stew, Esau came in from the field, and he was exhausted. And Esau said to Jacob,“ Let me eat some of that red stew, for I am exhausted!”( Therefore his name was called Edom.)Jacob said,“ Sell me your birthright now.”Esau said,“ I am about to die; of what use is a birthright to me?”Jacob said,“ Swear to me now.” So he swore to him and sold his birthright to Jacob. Then Jacob gave Esau bread and lentil stew, and he ate and drank and rose and went his way. What then can I do for you, my son?”Esau said to his father,“ Have you but one blessing, my father? Bless me, even me also, O my father.” And Esau lifted up his voice and wept. Then Isaac his father answered and said to him:“ Behold, away from the fatness of the earth shall your dwelling be, and away from the dew of heaven on high.By your sword you shall live, and you shall serve your brother; but when you grow restless you shall break his yoke from your neck.”Now Esau hated Jacob because of the blessing with which his father had blessed him, and Esau said to himself,“ The days of mourning for my father are approaching; then I will kill my brother Jacob.”

And here we are in Kadesh, a city on the edge of your territory. Please let us pass through your land. We will not pass through field or vineyard, or drink water from a well. We will go along the King’s Highway. We will not turn aside to the right hand or to the left until we have passed through your territory.”But Edom said to him,“ You shall not pass through, lest I come out with the sword against you.”And the people of Israel said to him,“ We will go up by the highway, and if we drink of your water, I and my livestock, then I will pay for it. Let me only pass through on foot, nothing more.”But he said,“ You shall not pass through.” And Edom came out against them with a large army and with a strong force. Thus Edom refused to give Israel passage through his territory, so Israel turned away from him.
