犹大周围的列国都惧怕耶和华，不敢与约沙法争战。

在约旦河西岸一带的亚摩利众王和沿海一带的迦南众王，听说耶和华为了让以色列人过河而使约旦河成为干地，都吓得胆战心惊，勇气尽失。

但他们终必充满恐惧，因为上帝站在义人当中。

“我知道耶和华已经把这地方赐给你们，我们十分害怕。这里所有的居民都吓得胆战心惊。因为你们离开埃及过红海的时候，耶和华怎样使红海在你们面前成为干地，你们怎样对付约旦河东的两个亚摩利王西宏和噩，怎样把他们彻底消灭，我们都听说了。我们听了这些事，感到心惊胆战、勇气尽失。你们的上帝耶和华是天地万物的上帝。

我要从你面前赶走外族人，扩张你的领土。你一年三次来朝见你的上帝耶和华时，必没有人贪恋你的土地。

所到之处无人能抵挡你们，因为你们的上帝耶和华会使那些地方的人对你们充满惧怕，正如祂对你们的应许。

以东的族长惶恐，摩押的英雄颤栗，迦南的居民都胆战心惊。惊骇恐惧笼罩着他们。耶和华啊，你臂膀的大能吓得他们僵立如石，直到你的子民都安然走过，直到你买赎的子民都安然走过。

营房、田野的所有非利士人，包括驻军和那些突击队都非常恐慌。大地震动，众人恐惧万分。

牵来两头牛，把它们切成碎块，然后派使者把碎块分发到以色列全境，并且宣布：“谁拒绝跟随扫罗和撒母耳出战，他的牛就要被砍成这样。”上帝使百姓充满恐惧，他们都同心合意地响应。

攻陷了基拉耳四周的城邑，因为这些城里的人都惧怕耶和华。他们洗劫各城，因为城中有大量财物。

雅各责备西缅和利未说：“你们为什么要给我惹麻烦，使我在当地的迦南人和比利洗人中留下臭名呢？我们人数很少，要是他们联手来攻击我们，我们全家必遭灭门之祸。”
