According to the commandment of the Lord to Joshua, he gave to Caleb the son of Jephunneh a portion among the people of Judah, Kiriath-arba, that is, Hebron( Arba was the father of Anak).

At Hebron he reigned over Judah seven years and six months, and at Jerusalem he reigned over all Israel and Judah thirty-three years.

Now therefore, my son, obey my voice. Arise, flee to Laban my brother in Haranand stay with him a while, until your brother’s fury turns away—until your brother’s anger turns away from you, and he forgets what you have done to him. Then I will send and bring you from there. Why should I be bereft of you both in one day?”

Then one who had escaped came and told Abram the Hebrew, who was living by the oaks of Mamre the Amorite, brother of Eshcol and of Aner. These were allies of Abram.

So all the elders of Israel came to the king at Hebron, and King David made a covenant with them at Hebron before the Lord, and they anointed David king over Israel.

They gave them Kiriath-arba( Arba being the father of Anak), that is Hebron, in the hill country of Judah, along with the pasturelands around it.

Thus Isaac sent Jacob away. And he went to Paddan-aram, to Laban, the son of Bethuel the Aramean, the brother of Rebekah, Jacob’s and Esau’s mother.

So now give me this hill country of which the Lord spoke on that day, for you heard on that day how the Anakim were there, with great fortified cities. It may be that the Lord will be with me, and I shall drive them out just as the Lord said.”Then Joshua blessed him, and he gave Hebron to Caleb the son of Jephunneh for an inheritance.Therefore Hebron became the inheritance of Caleb the son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite to this day, because he wholly followed the Lord, the God of Israel.Now the name of Hebron formerly was Kiriath-arba.( Arba was the greatest man among the Anakim.) And the land had rest from war.

After this David inquired of the Lord,“ Shall I go up into any of the cities of Judah?” And the Lord said to him,“ Go up.” David said,“ To which shall I go up?” And he said,“ To Hebron.”

Then all the tribes of Israel came to David at Hebron and said,“ Behold, we are your bone and flesh.

And David brought up his men who were with him, everyone with his household, and they lived in the towns of Hebron.

And the time that David was king in Hebron over the house of Judah was seven years and six months.
