The LORD appeared to Abraham at the oaks of Mamre while he was sitting at the entrance of his tent during the heat of the day.

Sarah died in Kiriath-arba( that is, Hebron) in the land of Canaan, and Abraham went in to mourn for Sarah and to weep for her.

He gave Caleb son of Jephunneh the following portion among the descendants of Judah based on the LORD’s instruction to Joshua: Kiriath-arba( that is, Hebron; Arba was the father of Anak).

In Hebron he reigned over Judah seven years and six months, and in Jerusalem he reigned thirty-three years over all Israel and Judah.

So now, my son, listen to me. Flee at once to my brother Laban in Haran,and stay with him for a few days until your brother’s anger subsides—until your brother’s rage turns away from you and he forgets what you have done to him. Then I will send for you and bring you back from there. Why should I lose you both in one day?”

One of the survivors came and told Abram the Hebrew, who lived near the oaks belonging to Mamre the Amorite, the brother of Eshcol and the brother of Aner. They were bound by a treaty with Abram.

So all the elders of Israel came to the king at Hebron. King David made a covenant with them at Hebron in the LORD’s presence, and they anointed David king over Israel.

They gave them Kiriath-arba( that is, Hebron; Arba was the father of Anak) with its surrounding pasturelands in the hill country of Judah.

So Isaac sent Jacob to Paddan-aram, to Laban son of Bethuel the Aramean, the brother of Rebekah, the mother of Jacob and Esau.

Now give me this hill country the LORD promised me on that day, because you heard then that the Anakim are there, as well as large fortified cities. Perhaps the LORD will be with me and I will drive them out as the LORD promised.”Then Joshua blessed Caleb son of Jephunneh and gave him Hebron as an inheritance.Therefore, Hebron still belongs to Caleb son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite as an inheritance today because he followed the LORD, the God of Israel, completely.Hebron’s name used to be Kiriath-arba; Arba was the greatest man among the Anakim. After this, the land had rest from war.

Some time later, David inquired of the LORD:“ Should I go to one of the towns of Judah?” The LORD answered him,“ Go.” Then David asked,“ Where should I go?”“ To Hebron,” the LORD replied.

All the tribes of Israel came to David at Hebron and said,“ Here we are, your own flesh and blood.

In addition, David brought the men who were with him, each one with his family, and they settled in the towns near Hebron.

The length of time that David was king in Hebron over the house of Judah was seven years and six months.
