又曰、我乃全能之上帝、爾其蕃息昌熾、一族眾族由爾而生、多王由爾而出、

又曰、我乃全能之上帝、使爾生育眾多、以成群族、列王皆由爾出。

天主又諭之曰、我乃全能之天主、使爾生育眾多、爾後裔必成一族、以至群族、列王皆由爾出、

And God said to him,“ I am God Almighty; be fruitful and increase in number. A nation and a community of nations will come from you, and kings will be among your descendants.

God said to him,“ I am the Mighty God. Have children so that there will be many of you. You will become the father of a nation and a community of nations. Your later family will include kings.

Then God said,“ I am El Shaddai—‘ God Almighty.’ Be fruitful and multiply. You will become a great nation, even many nations. Kings will be among your descendants!

God also said to him,“ I am God Almighty. Be fruitful and multiply. A nation, indeed an assembly of nations, will come from you, and kings will descend from you.

When Abram was ninety-nine years old the Lord appeared to Abram and said to him,“ I am God Almighty; walk before me, and be blameless,

I appeared to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, as God Almighty, but by my name the Lord I did not make myself known to them.

No longer shall your name be called Abram, but your name shall be Abraham, for I have made you the father of a multitude of nations.I will make you exceedingly fruitful, and I will make you into nations, and kings shall come from you.And I will establish my covenant between me and you and your offspring after you throughout their generations for an everlasting covenant, to be God to you and to your offspring after you.

I will bless her, and moreover, I will give you a son by her. I will bless her, and she shall become nations; kings of peoples shall come from her.”

I will surely bless you, and I will surely multiply your offspring as the stars of heaven and as the sand that is on the seashore. And your offspring shall possess the gate of his enemies,

But the people of Israel were fruitful and increased greatly; they multiplied and grew exceedingly strong, so that the land was filled with them.

And I will make of you a great nation, and I will bless you and make your name great, so that you will be a blessing.

Your offspring shall be like the dust of the earth, and you shall spread abroad to the west and to the east and to the north and to the south, and in you and your offspring shall all the families of the earth be blessed.

But you said,‘ I will surely do you good, and make your offspring as the sand of the sea, which cannot be numbered for multitude.’”

Then he said,“ I am God, the God of your father. Do not be afraid to go down to Egypt, for there I will make you into a great nation.

And he brought him outside and said,“ Look toward heaven, and number the stars, if you are able to number them.” Then he said to him,“ So shall your offspring be.”

seeing that Abraham shall surely become a great and mighty nation, and all the nations of the earth shall be blessed in him?

And God blessed Noah and his sons and said to them,“ Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth.

Is anything too hard for the Lord? At the appointed time I will return to you, about this time next year, and Sarah shall have a son.”

and I will be a father to you, and you shall be sons and daughters to me, says the Lord Almighty.”

And Jacob said to Joseph,“ God Almighty appeared to me at Luz in the land of Canaan and blessed me,and said to me,‘ Behold, I will make you fruitful and multiply you, and I will make of you a company of peoples and will give this land to your offspring after you for an everlasting possession.’

I will make your offspring as the dust of the earth, so that if one can count the dust of the earth, your offspring also can be counted.

God Almighty bless you and make you fruitful and multiply you, that you may become a company of peoples.May he give the blessing of Abraham to you and to your offspring with you, that you may take possession of the land of your sojournings that God gave to Abraham!”

May God Almighty grant you mercy before the man, and may he send back your other brother and Benjamin. And as for me, if I am bereaved of my children, I am bereaved.”

There was a certain man of Ramathaim-zophim of the hill country of Ephraim whose name was Elkanah the son of Jeroham, son of Elihu, son of Tohu, son of Zuph, an Ephrathite.He had two wives. The name of the one was Hannah, and the name of the other, Peninnah. And Peninnah had children, but Hannah had no children.Now this man used to go up year by year from his city to worship and to sacrifice to the Lord of hosts at Shiloh, where the two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, were priests of the Lord.On the day when Elkanah sacrificed, he would give portions to Peninnah his wife and to all her sons and daughters.But to Hannah he gave a double portion, because he loved her, though the Lord had closed her womb.And her rival used to provoke her grievously to irritate her, because the Lord had closed her womb.So it went on year by year. As often as she went up to the house of the Lord, she used to provoke her. Therefore Hannah wept and would not eat.And Elkanah, her husband, said to her,“ Hannah, why do you weep? And why do you not eat? And why is your heart sad? Am I not more to you than ten sons?”After they had eaten and drunk in Shiloh, Hannah rose. Now Eli the priest was sitting on the seat beside the doorpost of the temple of the Lord.She was deeply distressed and prayed to the Lord and wept bitterly.And she vowed a vow and said,“ O Lord of hosts, if you will indeed look on the affliction of your servant and remember me and not forget your servant, but will give to your servant a son, then I will give him to the Lord all the days of his life, and no razor shall touch his head.”As she continued praying before the Lord, Eli observed her mouth.Hannah was speaking in her heart; only her lips moved, and her voice was not heard. Therefore Eli took her to be a drunken woman.And Eli said to her,“ How long will you go on being drunk? Put your wine away from you.”But Hannah answered,“ No, my lord, I am a woman troubled in spirit. I have drunk neither wine nor strong drink, but I have been pouring out my soul before the Lord.Do not regard your servant as a worthless woman, for all along I have been speaking out of my great anxiety and vexation.”Then Eli answered,“ Go in peace, and the God of Israel grant your petition that you have made to him.”And she said,“ Let your servant find favor in your eyes.” Then the woman went her way and ate, and her face was no longer sad.They rose early in the morning and worshiped before the Lord; then they went back to their house at Ramah. And Elkanah knew Hannah his wife, and the Lord remembered her.And in due time Hannah conceived and bore a son, and she called his name Samuel, for she said,“ I have asked for him from the Lord.”The man Elkanah and all his house went up to offer to the Lord the yearly sacrifice and to pay his vow.But Hannah did not go up, for she said to her husband,“ As soon as the child is weaned, I will bring him, so that he may appear in the presence of the Lord and dwell there forever.”Elkanah her husband said to her,“ Do what seems best to you; wait until you have weaned him; only, may the Lord establish his word.” So the woman remained and nursed her son until she weaned him.And when she had weaned him, she took him up with her, along with a three-year-old bull, an ephah of flour, and a skin of wine, and she brought him to the house of the Lord at Shiloh. And the child was young.Then they slaughtered the bull, and they brought the child to Eli.And she said,“ Oh, my lord! As you live, my lord, I am the woman who was standing here in your presence, praying to the Lord.For this child I prayed, and the Lord has granted me my petition that I made to him.Therefore I have lent him to the Lord. As long as he lives, he is lent to the Lord.” And he worshiped the Lord there.

The Lord spoke to Moses in the wilderness of Sinai, in the tent of meeting, on the first day of the second month, in the second year after they had come out of the land of Egypt, saying,“ Take a census of all the congregation of the people of Israel, by clans, by fathers’ houses, according to the number of names, every male, head by head.From twenty years old and upward, all in Israel who are able to go to war, you and Aaron shall list them, company by company.And there shall be with you a man from each tribe, each man being the head of the house of his fathers.And these are the names of the men who shall assist you. From Reuben, Elizur the son of Shedeur;from Simeon, Shelumiel the son of Zurishaddai;from Judah, Nahshon the son of Amminadab;from Issachar, Nethanel the son of Zuar;from Zebulun, Eliab the son of Helon;from the sons of Joseph, from Ephraim, Elishama the son of Ammihud, and from Manasseh, Gamaliel the son of Pedahzur;from Benjamin, Abidan the son of Gideoni;from Dan, Ahiezer the son of Ammishaddai;from Asher, Pagiel the son of Ochran;from Gad, Eliasaph the son of Deuel;from Naphtali, Ahira the son of Enan.”These were the ones chosen from the congregation, the chiefs of their ancestral tribes, the heads of the clans of Israel.Moses and Aaron took these men who had been named,and on the first day of the second month, they assembled the whole congregation together, who registered themselves by clans, by fathers’ houses, according to the number of names from twenty years old and upward, head by head,as the Lord commanded Moses. So he listed them in the wilderness of Sinai.The people of Reuben, Israel’s firstborn, their generations, by their clans, by their fathers’ houses, according to the number of names, head by head, every male from twenty years old and upward, all who were able to go to war:those listed of the tribe of Reuben were 46,500.Of the people of Simeon, their generations, by their clans, by their fathers’ houses, those of them who were listed, according to the number of names, head by head, every male from twenty years old and upward, all who were able to go to war:those listed of the tribe of Simeon were 59,300.Of the people of Gad, their generations, by their clans, by their fathers’ houses, according to the number of the names, from twenty years old and upward, all who were able to go to war:those listed of the tribe of Gad were 45,650.Of the people of Judah, their generations, by their clans, by their fathers’ houses, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and upward, every man able to go to war:
