He said,“ Your name will no longer be called Jacob, but Israel; for you have fought with God and with men, and have prevailed.”

曰、今而後、爾不復名雅各、當名以色列、蓋爾與上帝及人較量、而獲勝也、

曰今以後、不祇名雅各、更名以色列、蓋爾得志於上帝前、與人爭無不勝。

曰、今而後裔不復名雅各、乃名以色列、蓋爾與神與人較量、無不得勝、

Then the man said,“ Your name will no longer be Jacob, but Israel, because you have struggled with God and with humans and have overcome.”

Then the man said,“ Your name will not be Jacob anymore. Instead, it will be Israel. You have wrestled with God and with people. And you have won.”

Then he said,“ Your name shall no longer be called Jacob, but Israel, for you have striven with God and with men, and have prevailed.”

“ Your name will no longer be Jacob,” the man told him.“ From now on you will be called Israel, because you have fought with God and with men and have won.”

“ Your name will no longer be Jacob,” he said.“ It will be Israel because you have struggled with God and with men and have prevailed.”

Then he said,“ Your name shall no longer be Jacob, but Israel; for you have contended with God and with men, and have prevailed.”

And He said,“ Your name shall no longer be called Jacob, but Israel; for you have struggled with God and with men, and have prevailed.”

And he said, Thy name shall be called no more Jacob, but Israel: for thou hast striven with God and with men, and hast prevailed.

“ Your name will no longer be Jacob,” He said.“ It will be Israel because you have struggled with God and with men and have prevailed.”

And he said, Thy name shall be called no more Jacob, but Israel: for as a prince hast thou power with God and with men, and hast prevailed.

“ No longer will your name be Jacob,” the man told him,“ but Israel, because you have fought with God and with men and have prevailed.”

God said to him,“ Your name is Jacob. Your name shall not be Jacob any more, but your name will be Israel.” He named him Israel.

He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the assemblies. To him who overcomes, to him I will give of the hidden manna, and I will give him a white stone, and on the stone a new name written, which no one knows but he who receives it.

To this day they do what they did before. They don’t fear Yahweh, and they do not follow the statutes, or the ordinances, or the law, or the commandment which Yahweh commanded the children of Jacob, whom he named Israel;

Your name will no more be called Abram, but your name will be Abraham; for I have made you the father of a multitude of nations.

The nations will see your righteousness, and all kings your glory. You will be called by a new name, which Yahweh’s mouth will name.You will also be a crown of beauty in Yahweh‘ s hand, and a royal diadem in your God’s hand.You will not be called Forsaken any more, nor will your land be called Desolate any more; but you will be called Hephzibah, and your land Beulah; for Yahweh delights in you, and your land will be married.

In the womb he took his brother by the heel; and in his manhood he contended with God.Indeed, he struggled with the angel, and prevailed; he wept, and made supplication to him. He found him at Bethel, and there he spoke with us,even Yahweh, the God of Armies; Yahweh is his name of renown!

You will leave your name for a curse to my chosen; and the Lord Yahweh will kill you. He will call his servants by another name,

Esau ran to meet him, embraced him, fell on his neck, kissed him, and they wept.

Elijah took twelve stones, according to the number of the tribes of the sons of Jacob, to whom Yahweh’s word came, saying,“ Israel shall be your name.”

Isaac trembled violently, and said,“ Who, then, is he who has taken venison, and brought it to me, and I have eaten of all before you came, and have blessed him? Yes, he will be blessed.”When Esau heard the words of his father, he cried with an exceedingly great and bitter cry, and said to his father,“ Bless me, even me also, my father.”He said,“ Your brother came with deceit, and has taken away your blessing.”He said,“ Isn’t he rightly named Jacob? For he has supplanted me these two times. He took away my birthright. See, now he has taken away my blessing.” He said,“ Haven’t you reserved a blessing for me?”

God said to Abraham,“ As for Sarai your wife, you shall not call her name Sarai, but her name will be Sarah.

Jacob said,“ First, sell me your birthright.”

and he sent by the hand of Nathan the prophet, and he named him Jedidiah, for Yahweh’s sake.

Then Saul said to David,“ You are blessed, my son David. You will both do mightily, and will surely prevail.” So David went his way, and Saul returned to his place.

These are the names of the men who Moses sent to spy out the land. Moses called Hoshea the son of Nun Joshua.

When a man’s ways please Yahweh, he makes even his enemies to be at peace with him.

He erected an altar there, and called it El Elohe Israel.

He brought him to Jesus. Jesus looked at him, and said,“ You are Simon the son of Jonah. You shall be called Cephas”( which is by interpretation, Peter).

Jacob was angry, and argued with Laban. Jacob answered Laban,“ What is my trespass? What is my sin, that you have hotly pursued me?Now that you have felt around in all my stuff, what have you found of all your household stuff? Set it here before my relatives and your relatives, that they may judge between us two.“ These twenty years I have been with you. Your ewes and your female goats have not cast their young, and I haven’t eaten the rams of your flocks.That which was torn of animals, I didn’t bring to you. I bore its loss. Of my hand you required it, whether stolen by day or stolen by night.This was my situation: in the day the drought consumed me, and the frost by night; and my sleep fled from my eyes.These twenty years I have been in your house. I served you fourteen years for your two daughters, and six years for your flock, and you have changed my wages ten times.Unless the God of my father, the God of Abraham, and the fear of Isaac, had been with me, surely now you would have sent me away empty. God has seen my affliction and the labor of my hands, and rebuked you last night.”Laban answered Jacob,“ The daughters are my daughters, the children are my children, the flocks are my flocks, and all that you see is mine! What can I do today to these my daughters, or to their children whom they have borne?Now come, let’s make a covenant, you and I. Let it be for a witness between me and you.”Jacob took a stone, and set it up for a pillar.Jacob said to his relatives,“ Gather stones.” They took stones, and made a heap. They ate there by the heap.Laban called it Jegar Sahadutha, but Jacob called it Galeed.Laban said,“ This heap is witness between me and you today.” Therefore it was named Galeedand Mizpah, for he said,“ Yahweh watch between me and you, when we are absent one from another.If you afflict my daughters, or if you take wives in addition to my daughters, no man is with us; behold, God is witness between me and you.”Laban said to Jacob,“ See this heap, and see the pillar, which I have set between me and you.May this heap be a witness, and the pillar be a witness, that I will not pass over this heap to you, and that you will not pass over this heap and this pillar to me, for harm.The God of Abraham, and the God of Nahor, the God of their father, judge between us.” Then Jacob swore by the fear of his father, Isaac.Jacob offered a sacrifice in the mountain, and called his relatives to eat bread. They ate bread, and stayed all night in the mountain.Early in the morning, Laban rose up, and kissed his sons and his daughters, and blessed them. Laban departed and returned to his place.

God came to Laban the Syrian in a dream of the night, and said to him,“ Be careful that you don’t speak to Jacob either good or bad.”

Jacob was left alone, and wrestled with a man there until the breaking of the day.
