Then the man said,“ Your name will no longer be Jacob, but Israel, because you have struggled with God and with humans and have overcome.”

Then the man said,“ Your name will not be Jacob anymore. Instead, it will be Israel. You have wrestled with God and with people. And you have won.”

Then he said,“ Your name shall no longer be called Jacob, but Israel, for you have striven with God and with men, and have prevailed.”

“ Your name will no longer be Jacob,” the man told him.“ From now on you will be called Israel, because you have fought with God and with men and have won.”

“ Your name will no longer be Jacob,” he said.“ It will be Israel because you have struggled with God and with men and have prevailed.”

Then he said,“ Your name shall no longer be Jacob, but Israel; for you have contended with God and with men, and have prevailed.”

And he said, Thy name shall be called no more Jacob, but Israel: for thou hast striven with God and with men, and hast prevailed.

“ Your name will no longer be Jacob,” He said.“ It will be Israel because you have struggled with God and with men and have prevailed.”

And he said, Thy name shall be called no more Jacob, but Israel: for as a prince hast thou power with God and with men, and hast prevailed.

“ No longer will your name be Jacob,” the man told him,“ but Israel, because you have fought with God and with men and have prevailed.”

He said,“ Your name will no longer be called Jacob, but Israel; for you have fought with God and with men, and have prevailed.”

And God said to him,“ Your name is Jacob; your name shall not be called Jacob anymore, but Israel shall be your name.” So He called his name Israel.

“ He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. To him who overcomes I will give some of the hidden manna to eat. And I will give him a white stone, and on the stone a new name written which no one knows except him who receives it.”’

To this day they continue practicing the former rituals; they do not fear the Lord, nor do they follow their statutes or their ordinances, or the law and commandment which the Lord had commanded the children of Jacob, whom He named Israel,

No longer shall your name be called Abram, but your name shall be Abraham; for I have made you a father of many nations.

The Gentiles shall see your righteousness, And all kings your glory. You shall be called by a new name, Which the mouth of the Lord will name.You shall also be a crown of glory In the hand of the Lord, And a royal diadem In the hand of your God.You shall no longer be termed Forsaken, Nor shall your land any more be termed Desolate; But you shall be called Hephzibah, and your land Beulah; For the Lord delights in you, And your land shall be married.

He took his brother by the heel in the womb, And in his strength he struggled with God.Yes, he struggled with the Angel and prevailed; He wept, and sought favor from Him. He found Him in Bethel, And there He spoke to us—That is, the Lord God of hosts. The Lord is His memorable name.

You shall leave your name as a curse to My chosen; For the Lord GOD will slay you, And call His servants by another name;

But Esau ran to meet him, and embraced him, and fell on his neck and kissed him, and they wept.

And Elijah took twelve stones, according to the number of the tribes of the sons of Jacob, to whom the word of the Lord had come, saying,“ Israel shall be your name.”

Then Isaac trembled exceedingly, and said,“ Who? Where is the one who hunted game and brought it to me? I ate all of it before you came, and I have blessed him— and indeed he shall be blessed.”When Esau heard the words of his father, he cried with an exceedingly great and bitter cry, and said to his father,“ Bless me— me also, O my father!”But he said,“ Your brother came with deceit and has taken away your blessing.”And Esau said,“ Is he not rightly named Jacob? For he has supplanted me these two times. He took away my birthright, and now look, he has taken away my blessing!” And he said,“ Have you not reserved a blessing for me?”

Then God said to Abraham,“ As for Sarai your wife, you shall not call her name Sarai, but Sarah shall be her name.

But Jacob said,“ Sell me your birthright as of this day.”

and He sent word by the hand of Nathan the prophet: So he called his name Jedidiah, because of the Lord.

Then Saul said to David,“ May you be blessed, my son David! You shall both do great things and also still prevail.” So David went on his way, and Saul returned to his place.

These are the names of the men whom Moses sent to spy out the land. And Moses called Hoshea the son of Nun, Joshua.

When a man’s ways please the Lord, He makes even his enemies to be at peace with him.

Then he erected an altar there and called it El Elohe Israel.

And he brought him to Jesus. Now when Jesus looked at him, He said,“ You are Simon the son of Jonah. You shall be called Cephas”( which is translated, A Stone).

Then Jacob was angry and rebuked Laban, and Jacob answered and said to Laban:“ What is my trespass? What is my sin, that you have so hotly pursued me?Although you have searched all my things, what part of your household things have you found? Set it here before my brethren and your brethren, that they may judge between us both!These twenty years I have been with you; your ewes and your female goats have not miscarried their young, and I have not eaten the rams of your flock.That which was torn by beasts I did not bring to you; I bore the loss of it. You required it from my hand, whether stolen by day or stolen by night.There I was! In the day the drought consumed me, and the frost by night, and my sleep departed from my eyes.Thus I have been in your house twenty years; I served you fourteen years for your two daughters, and six years for your flock, and you have changed my wages ten times.Unless the God of my father, the God of Abraham and the Fear of Isaac, had been with me, surely now you would have sent me away empty-handed. God has seen my affliction and the labor of my hands, and rebuked you last night.”And Laban answered and said to Jacob,“ These daughters are my daughters, and these children are my children, and this flock is my flock; all that you see is mine. But what can I do this day to these my daughters or to their children whom they have borne?Now therefore, come, let us make a covenant, you and I, and let it be a witness between you and me.”So Jacob took a stone and set it up as a pillar.Then Jacob said to his brethren,“ Gather stones.” And they took stones and made a heap, and they ate there on the heap.Laban called it Jegar Sahadutha, but Jacob called it Galeed.And Laban said,“ This heap is a witness between you and me this day.” Therefore its name was called Galeed,also Mizpah, because he said,“ May the Lord watch between you and me when we are absent one from another.If you afflict my daughters, or if you take other wives besides my daughters, although no man is with us— see, God is witness between you and me!”Then Laban said to Jacob,“ Here is this heap and here is this pillar, which I have placed between you and me.This heap is a witness, and this pillar is a witness, that I will not pass beyond this heap to you, and you will not pass beyond this heap and this pillar to me, for harm.The God of Abraham, the God of Nahor, and the God of their father judge between us.” And Jacob swore by the Fear of his father Isaac.Then Jacob offered a sacrifice on the mountain, and called his brethren to eat bread. And they ate bread and stayed all night on the mountain.And early in the morning Laban arose, and kissed his sons and daughters and blessed them. Then Laban departed and returned to his place.

But God had come to Laban the Syrian in a dream by night, and said to him,“ Be careful that you speak to Jacob neither good nor bad.”

Then Jacob was left alone; and a Man wrestled with him until the breaking of day.
