Jacob stayed where he was for the night. Then he selected these gifts from his possessions to present to his brother, Esau:

So their father, Jacob, finally said to them,“ If it can’t be avoided, then at least do this. Pack your bags with the best products of this land. Take them down to the man as gifts— balm, honey, gum, aromatic resin, pistachio nuts, and almonds.

Giving a gift can open doors; it gives access to important people!

A secret gift calms anger; a bribe under the table pacifies fury.

Many seek favors from a ruler; everyone is the friend of a person who gives gifts!

A bribe is like a lucky charm; whoever gives one will prosper!

When Joseph came home, they gave him the gifts they had brought him, then bowed low to the ground before him.

Since Joseph was governor of all Egypt and in charge of selling grain to all the people, it was to him that his brothers came. When they arrived, they bowed before him with their faces to the ground.

And be sure to say,‘ Look, your servant Jacob is right behind us.’” Jacob thought,“ I will try to appease him by sending gifts ahead of me. When I see him in person, perhaps he will be friendly to me.”So the gifts were sent on ahead, while Jacob himself spent that night in the camp.

Ask your own men, and they will tell you this is true. So would you be kind to us, since we have come at a time of celebration? Please share any provisions you might have on hand with us and with your friend David.”

But Jacob insisted,“ No, if I have found favor with you, please accept this gift from me. And what a relief to see your friendly smile. It is like seeing the face of God!

He looked up and noticed three men standing nearby. When he saw them, he ran to meet them and welcomed them, bowing low to the ground.

And here is a present that I, your servant, have brought to you and your young men.
