那一天以色列人很窘迫，因為掃羅對人民起誓說：『凡未到晚上、我還未從仇敵身上報完了仇以前喫甚麼食物的人、都必受咒詛』；因此人民連嘗嘗甚麼食物都沒有。那時國內全地、人進入了森林，都有蜜在地面上。人民進了森林，聽見有蜜滴下來，卻沒有人敢伸手取蜜入口，因為怕那起誓的話。原來約拿單沒有聽見他父親向人民所起的誓，故此伸出手中的杖，用杖頭蘸在蜂房裏，轉手送到口中；這一來，他眼睛就明亮了。人民中有一個人應時地說：『你父親曾向人民鄭重地起誓說：「今天喫甚麼食物的人必受咒詛」；因此人民都疲乏了。』約拿單說：『我父親把這地方搞壞了；你看，我嘗了這一點蜜，我眼睛就明亮了。

現在你既渴想着你父親的家，急地要去，為甚麼又偷了我的神像呢？』

說：『弟兄們，請別作壞事。

拉班帶領他的族弟兄去追趕，追了七天的路程，才在基列山追上了。

你僕人中、無論在誰那裏找着了，誰就該死，我們呢，也該做我主的奴僕。』管家的說：『現在就照你們的話這樣行吧：在誰那裏找着了，誰就該做我的奴僕，你們呢、都沒有罪。』於是他們各人急忙把布袋卸下在地上，各人打開布袋。管家的就搜查，從大的起、到小的為止；那杯竟在便雅憫的布袋裏找着了。

當時拉班剪羊毛去了；拉結偷了他父親的家神像。

看哪，我在這裏；你們儘管當着永恆主和他所膏立者面前、作證控訴我：我取過誰的牛？取過誰的驢？我欺壓過誰，壓制過誰？我從誰手裏取過贖金，以致蒙蔽眼睛？作證控訴我吧，我要償還。』眾人說：『你未曾欺壓過我們，未曾壓制過我們，也未曾從任何人手裏取過甚麼。』撒母耳對他們說：『你們在我手裏沒有找着甚麼；有永恆主在你們中間作證，也有他所膏立者今天作證。』他們說：『有他作證。』

這就可以避免人在我們所經管這豐裕的博施上挑剔我們。因為我們籌謀行為之美善，不但在主面前，也在人面前。

我所差遣到你們那裏去的人、我何曾藉着其中的哪一位去佔你們的便宜呢？我勸了提多到你們那裏去，又差遣那位兄弟一同去；提多何曾佔了你們的便宜呢？我們沒有順着同一的靈而行麼？沒有跟着同一個的腳蹤麼？你們這一向還以為我們是向你們辯訴呢！不，我們乃是在基督裏、當着上帝面前說話的；而且一切都是為了建立你們的，親愛的啊。

日後你來查看我在你面前的工價，凡在我手裏的、母山羊中不是有斑有點的、綿羔羊中不是黑色的，就算是我偷的，這樣、我的老實就會作證告我了。』

亞伯蘭就對羅得說：『你我之間、不可紛爭；你牧人和我牧人之間、也不可紛爭，因為我們是族弟兄。
