耶和華對雅各說：「你要回你祖先之地，到你本族那裏去，我必與你同在。」

他做夢，看哪，一個梯子立在地上，梯子的頂端直伸到天；看哪，神的使者在梯子上，上去下來。看哪，耶和華站在梯子上面，說：「我是耶和華－你祖父亞伯拉罕的神，以撒的神。你現在躺臥之地，我要將它賜給你和你的後裔。你的後裔必像地上的塵沙，必向東西南北開展；地上萬族必因你和你的後裔得福。看哪，我必與你同在，無論你往哪裏去，我必保佑你，領你歸回這地。我總不離棄你，直到我實現了對你所說的話。」雅各睡醒了，說：「耶和華真的在這裏，我竟不知道！」他就懼怕，說：「這地方何等可畏！這不是別的，是神的殿，是天的門。」雅各清早起來，拿起枕在頭下的石頭，立作柱子，澆油在上面。他給那地方起名叫伯特利；那地方原先名叫路斯。雅各許願說：「神若與我同在，在我所行的路上保佑我，給我食物吃，衣服穿，使我平平安安回到我父親的家，我就必以耶和華為我的神。我所立為柱子的這塊石頭必作神的殿；凡你所賜給我的，我必將十分之一獻給你。」

他在那裏築了一座壇，給那地方起名叫伊勒‧伯特利，因為他逃避他哥哥的時候，神曾在那裏向他顯現。
