She named him Joseph, and said,“ May the Lord add to me another son.”

They shall be on the head of Joseph, And on the crown of the head of him who was separate from his brothers.

the sons of Rachel were Joseph and Benjamin;

This is the history of Jacob. Joseph, being seventeen years old, was feeding the flock with his brothers. And the lad was with the sons of Bilhah and the sons of Zilpah, his father’s wives; and Joseph brought a bad report of them to his father.

By faith Jacob, when he was dying, blessed each of the sons of Joseph, and worshiped, leaning on the top of his staff.By faith Joseph, when he was dying, made mention of the departure of the children of Israel, and gave instructions concerning his bones.

Now Joseph was governor over the land; and it was he who sold to all the people of the land. And Joseph’s brothers came and bowed down before him with their faces to the earth.

Now it came to pass, when she was in hard labor, that the midwife said to her,“ Do not fear; you will have this son also.”And so it was, as her soul was departing( for she died), that she called his name Ben-Oni; but his father called him Benjamin.

“ As for you, son of man, take a stick for yourself and write on it:‘ For Judah and for the children of Israel, his companions.’ Then take another stick and write on it,‘ For Joseph, the stick of Ephraim, and for all the house of Israel, his companions.’

Now Joseph had been taken down to Egypt. And Potiphar, an officer of Pharaoh, captain of the guard, an Egyptian, bought him from the Ishmaelites who had taken him down there.The Lord was with Joseph, and he was a successful man; and he was in the house of his master the Egyptian.And his master saw that the Lord was with him and that the Lord made all he did to prosper in his hand.So Joseph found favor in his sight, and served him. Then he made him overseer of his house, and all that he had he put under his authority.So it was, from the time that he had made him overseer of his house and all that he had, that the Lord blessed the Egyptian’s house for Joseph’s sake; and the blessing of the Lord was on all that he had in the house and in the field.Thus he left all that he had in Joseph’s hand, and he did not know what he had except for the bread which he ate. Now Joseph was handsome in form and appearance.And it came to pass after these things that his master’s wife cast longing eyes on Joseph, and she said,“ Lie with me.”But he refused and said to his master’s wife,“ Look, my master does not know what is with me in the house, and he has committed all that he has to my hand.There is no one greater in this house than I, nor has he kept back anything from me but you, because you are his wife. How then can I do this great wickedness, and sin against God?”So it was, as she spoke to Joseph day by day, that he did not heed her, to lie with her or to be with her.But it happened about this time, when Joseph went into the house to do his work, and none of the men of the house was inside,that she caught him by his garment, saying,“ Lie with me.” But he left his garment in her hand, and fled and ran outside.And so it was, when she saw that he had left his garment in her hand and fled outside,that she called to the men of her house and spoke to them, saying,“ See, he has brought in to us a Hebrew to mock us. He came in to me to lie with me, and I cried out with a loud voice.And it happened, when he heard that I lifted my voice and cried out, that he left his garment with me, and fled and went outside.”So she kept his garment with her until his master came home.Then she spoke to him with words like these, saying,“ The Hebrew servant whom you brought to us came in to me to mock me;so it happened, as I lifted my voice and cried out, that he left his garment with me and fled outside.”So it was, when his master heard the words which his wife spoke to him, saying,“ Your servant did to me after this manner,” that his anger was aroused.Then Joseph’s master took him and put him into the prison, a place where the king’s prisoners were confined. And he was there in the prison.But the Lord was with Joseph and showed him mercy, and He gave him favor in the sight of the keeper of the prison.And the keeper of the prison committed to Joseph’s hand all the prisoners who were in the prison; whatever they did there, it was his doing.The keeper of the prison did not look into anything that was under Joseph’s authority, because the Lord was with him; and whatever he did, the Lord made it prosper.

But when his brothers saw that their father loved him more than all his brothers, they hated him and could not speak peaceably to him.

Now it came to pass after these things that Joseph was told,“ Indeed your father is sick”; and he took with him his two sons, Manasseh and Ephraim.And Jacob was told,“ Look, your son Joseph is coming to you”; and Israel strengthened himself and sat up on the bed.Then Jacob said to Joseph:“ God Almighty appeared to me at Luz in the land of Canaan and blessed me,and said to me,‘ Behold, I will make you fruitful and multiply you, and I will make of you a multitude of people, and give this land to your descendants after you as an everlasting possession.’And now your two sons, Ephraim and Manasseh, who were born to you in the land of Egypt before I came to you in Egypt, are mine; as Reuben and Simeon, they shall be mine.Your offspring whom you beget after them shall be yours; they will be called by the name of their brothers in their inheritance.But as for me, when I came from Padan, Rachel died beside me in the land of Canaan on the way, when there was but a little distance to go to Ephrath; and I buried her there on the way to Ephrath( that is, Bethlehem).”Then Israel saw Joseph’s sons, and said,“ Who are these?”Joseph said to his father,“ They are my sons, whom God has given me in this place.” And he said,“ Please bring them to me, and I will bless them.”Now the eyes of Israel were dim with age, so that he could not see. Then Joseph brought them near him, and he kissed them and embraced them.And Israel said to Joseph,“ I had not thought to see your face; but in fact, God has also shown me your offspring!”So Joseph brought them from beside his knees, and he bowed down with his face to the earth.And Joseph took them both, Ephraim with his right hand toward Israel’s left hand, and Manasseh with his left hand toward Israel’s right hand, and brought them near him.Then Israel stretched out his right hand and laid it on Ephraim’s head, who was the younger, and his left hand on Manasseh’s head, guiding his hands knowingly, for Manasseh was the firstborn.And he blessed Joseph, and said:“ God, before whom my fathers Abraham and Isaac walked, The God who has fed me all my life long to this day,The Angel who has redeemed me from all evil, Bless the lads; Let my name be named upon them, And the name of my fathers Abraham and Isaac; And let them grow into a multitude in the midst of the earth.”Now when Joseph saw that his father laid his right hand on the head of Ephraim, it displeased him; so he took hold of his father’s hand to remove it from Ephraim’s head to Manasseh’s head.And Joseph said to his father,“ Not so, my father, for this one is the firstborn; put your right hand on his head.”But his father refused and said,“ I know, my son, I know. He also shall become a people, and he also shall be great; but truly his younger brother shall be greater than he, and his descendants shall become a multitude of nations.”So he blessed them that day, saying,“ By you Israel will bless, saying,‘ May God make you as Ephraim and as Manasseh!’” And thus he set Ephraim before Manasseh.Then Israel said to Joseph,“ Behold, I am dying, but God will be with you and bring you back to the land of your fathers.Moreover I have given to you one portion above your brothers, which I took from the hand of the Amorite with my sword and my bow.”

And of Joseph he said:“ Blessed of the Lord is his land, With the precious things of heaven, with the dew, And the deep lying beneath,With the precious fruits of the sun, With the precious produce of the months,With the best things of the ancient mountains, With the precious things of the everlasting hills,With the precious things of the earth and its fullness, And the favor of Him who dwelt in the bush. Let the blessing come‘ on the head of Joseph, And on the crown of the head of him who was separate from his brothers.’His glory is like a firstborn bull, And his horns like the horns of the wild ox; Together with them He shall push the peoples To the ends of the earth; They are the ten thousands of Ephraim, And they are the thousands of Manasseh.”

“ And the patriarchs, becoming envious, sold Joseph into Egypt. But God was with himand delivered him out of all his troubles, and gave him favor and wisdom in the presence of Pharaoh, king of Egypt; and he made him governor over Egypt and all his house.Now a famine and great trouble came over all the land of Egypt and Canaan, and our fathers found no sustenance.But when Jacob heard that there was grain in Egypt, he sent out our fathers first.And the second time Joseph was made known to his brothers, and Joseph’s family became known to the Pharaoh.Then Joseph sent and called his father Jacob and all his relatives to him, seventy-five people.So Jacob went down to Egypt; and he died, he and our fathers.
