Then the man and his wife heard the sound of the Lord God as he was walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and they hid from the Lord God among the trees of the garden.

耶和華說：「難道人藏起來我就看不見了嗎？我豈不是充滿天地之間嗎？這是耶和華說的。

耶和華啊，你洞察我的內心，知道我的一切。我或坐下或起來，你都知道，你從遠處就知道我的心思意念。我或外出或躺臥，你都瞭解，你熟悉我的一切行為。耶和華啊，我話未出口，你已洞悉一切。你在我前後護衛著我，以大能的手保護我。這一切實在是太奇妙，太深奧了，我無法明白。我去哪裡可躲開你的靈？我跑到哪裡可避開你的面？我若升到天上，你在那裡；我若下到陰間，你也在那裡。縱使我乘著晨風飛到遙遠的海岸居住，就是在那裡，你的手必引導我，你大能的手必扶持我。我想，黑暗一定可以遮蔽我，讓我四圍變成黑夜。然而，即使黑暗也無法遮住你的視線。在你看來，黑夜亮如白晝，黑暗與光明無異。

受造物在上帝面前都無法隱藏，因為萬物都是赤裸裸地暴露在上帝眼前，我們必須向祂交帳。

我何曾像亞當一樣遮掩我的過犯，將罪惡藏在懷中，

可是，約拿卻起身逃往他施，想躲避耶和華。他到了約帕港，看見一艘要開往他施的船，就付了船費，上了船，想和眾人一起去他施，好躲避耶和華。

上帝鑒察世人的道路，觀看他們的腳步。沒有黑暗和陰影可供作惡者藏身。

耶和華的眼目無所不在，善人和惡人都被祂鑒察。

約拿回答說：「我是希伯來人，我敬畏耶和華，祂是創造海洋陸地、掌管諸天的上帝。」之後，他就把怎樣逃避耶和華的事告訴他們。眾人知道後，萬分恐懼，問他：「你怎麼做出這種事？」

這表明律法的要求刻在他們心裡，他們的良心也可以證明，因為他們的思想有時指控他們，有時為他們辯護。

即使他們挖洞鑽進陰間，我也要把他們揪出來；即使他們爬上高天，我也要把他們拉下來；即使他們藏在迦密山的峰頂，我也要去搜尋，捉住他們；即使他們潛到海底，我也要派海蛇去吞咬他們；

有哪個民族像你們一樣，聽見了上帝在火中說話，還活了下來？

那時，耶和華從旋風中回答約伯說：

因為你們的上帝耶和華常在營中巡視，要保護你們，擊敗你們的仇敵。軍營必須保持聖潔，免得祂在你們中間看到任何污穢之事，便離開你們。

那人說：「我聽見你在園中行走的聲音，就害怕得躲了起來，因為我赤身露體！」

但我們何必冒死，被這烈火吞噬呢？我們若再次聽到我們的上帝耶和華的聲音，必然喪命。

當祂在穹蒼巡弋時，密雲擋住祂的視線。』
