  • John 2:1-10
The next day there was a wedding celebration in the village of Cana in Galilee. Jesus’ mother was there, and Jesus and his disciples were also invited to the celebration. The wine supply ran out during the festivities, so Jesus’ mother told him,“ They have no more wine.”“ Dear woman, that’s not our problem,” Jesus replied.“ My time has not yet come.”But his mother told the servants,“ Do whatever he tells you.”Standing nearby were six stone water jars, used for Jewish ceremonial washing. Each could hold twenty to thirty gallons.Jesus told the servants,“ Fill the jars with water.” When the jars had been filled,he said,“ Now dip some out, and take it to the master of ceremonies.” So the servants followed his instructions. When the master of ceremonies tasted the water that was now wine, not knowing where it had come from( though, of course, the servants knew), he called the bridegroom over.“ A host always serves the best wine first,” he said.“ Then, when everyone has had a lot to drink, he brings out the less expensive wine. But you have kept the best until now!”
  • Matthew 25:1-10
“ Then the Kingdom of Heaven will be like ten bridesmaids who took their lamps and went to meet the bridegroom.Five of them were foolish, and five were wise. The five who were foolish didn’t take enough olive oil for their lamps, but the other five were wise enough to take along extra oil. When the bridegroom was delayed, they all became drowsy and fell asleep.“ At midnight they were roused by the shout,‘ Look, the bridegroom is coming! Come out and meet him!’“ All the bridesmaids got up and prepared their lamps. Then the five foolish ones asked the others,‘ Please give us some of your oil because our lamps are going out.’“ But the others replied,‘ We don’t have enough for all of us. Go to a shop and buy some for yourselves.’“ But while they were gone to buy oil, the bridegroom came. Then those who were ready went in with him to the marriage feast, and the door was locked.
  • Ruth 4:10-13
And with the land I have acquired Ruth, the Moabite widow of Mahlon, to be my wife. This way she can have a son to carry on the family name of her dead husband and to inherit the family property here in his hometown. You are all witnesses today.”Then the elders and all the people standing in the gate replied,“ We are witnesses! May the Lord make this woman who is coming into your home like Rachel and Leah, from whom all the nation of Israel descended! May you prosper in Ephrathah and be famous in Bethlehem. And may the Lord give you descendants by this young woman who will be like those of our ancestor Perez, the son of Tamar and Judah.”So Boaz took Ruth into his home, and she became his wife. When he slept with her, the Lord enabled her to become pregnant, and she gave birth to a son.
  • Matthew 22:2-10
“ The Kingdom of Heaven can be illustrated by the story of a king who prepared a great wedding feast for his son. When the banquet was ready, he sent his servants to notify those who were invited. But they all refused to come!“ So he sent other servants to tell them,‘ The feast has been prepared. The bulls and fattened cattle have been killed, and everything is ready. Come to the banquet!’But the guests he had invited ignored them and went their own way, one to his farm, another to his business.Others seized his messengers and insulted them and killed them.“ The king was furious, and he sent out his army to destroy the murderers and burn their town. And he said to his servants,‘ The wedding feast is ready, and the guests I invited aren’t worthy of the honor. Now go out to the street corners and invite everyone you see.’So the servants brought in everyone they could find, good and bad alike, and the banquet hall was filled with guests.
  • Judges 14:10-18
As his father was making final arrangements for the marriage, Samson threw a party at Timnah, as was the custom for elite young men. When the bride’s parents saw him, they selected thirty young men from the town to be his companions.Samson said to them,“ Let me tell you a riddle. If you solve my riddle during these seven days of the celebration, I will give you thirty fine linen robes and thirty sets of festive clothing. But if you can’t solve it, then you must give me thirty fine linen robes and thirty sets of festive clothing.”“ All right,” they agreed,“ let’s hear your riddle.”So he said:“ Out of the one who eats came something to eat; out of the strong came something sweet.” Three days later they were still trying to figure it out.On the fourth day they said to Samson’s wife,“ Entice your husband to explain the riddle for us, or we will burn down your father’s house with you in it. Did you invite us to this party just to make us poor?”So Samson’s wife came to him in tears and said,“ You don’t love me; you hate me! You have given my people a riddle, but you haven’t told me the answer.”“ I haven’t even given the answer to my father or mother,” he replied.“ Why should I tell you?”So she cried whenever she was with him and kept it up for the rest of the celebration. At last, on the seventh day he told her the answer because she was tormenting him with her nagging. Then she explained the riddle to the young men.So before sunset of the seventh day, the men of the town came to Samson with their answer:“ What is sweeter than honey? What is stronger than a lion?” Samson replied,“ If you hadn’t plowed with my heifer, you wouldn’t have solved my riddle!”
