And this memorial pillar I have set up will become a place for worshiping God, and I will present to God a tenth of everything he gives me.”

Jacob built an altar there and named the place El bethel( which means“ God of Bethel”), because God had appeared to him there when he was fleeing from his brother, Esau.

“ You must set aside a tithe of your crops— one tenth of all the crops you harvest each year.Bring this tithe to the designated place of worship— the place the Lord your God chooses for his name to be honored— and eat it there in his presence. This applies to your tithes of grain, new wine, olive oil, and the firstborn males of your flocks and herds. Doing this will teach you always to fear the Lord your God.

Then God said to Jacob,“ Get ready and move to Bethel and settle there. Build an altar there to the God who appeared to you when you fled from your brother, Esau.”

“ One tenth of the produce of the land, whether grain from the fields or fruit from the trees, belongs to the Lord and must be set apart to him as holy.If you want to buy back the Lord’s tenth of the grain or fruit, you must pay its value, plus 20 percent.Count off every tenth animal from your herds and flocks and set them apart for the Lord as holy.You may not pick and choose between good and bad animals, and you may not substitute one for another. But if you do exchange one animal for another, then both the original animal and its substitute will be considered holy and cannot be bought back.”

Then Abraham planted a tamarisk tree at Beersheba, and there he worshiped the Lord, the Eternal God.

After that, Abram traveled south and set up camp in the hill country, with Bethel to the west and Ai to the east. There he built another altar and dedicated it to the Lord, and he worshiped the Lord.

And there he built an altar and named it El Elohe Israel.

But he was also afraid and said,“ What an awesome place this is! It is none other than the house of God, the very gateway to heaven!”

Jacob set up a stone pillar to mark the place where God had spoken to him. Then he poured wine over it as an offering to God and anointed the pillar with olive oil.And Jacob named the place Bethel( which means“ house of God”), because God had spoken to him there.
