约兰执政期间，以东人反叛犹大，自己立王。约兰率领所有战车前往撒益，他和战车长们被以东人包围。他们乘夜出击，突出重围，各自逃回家去。以东人至今仍脱离犹大的统治。立拿人也在那个时候叛变了。

耶和华对她说：“你腹中有两个国家，你要生出两个敌对的民族，一族要比另一族强大，将来大的要服侍小的。”

原来以东人又来攻打犹大，掳掠民众。

从前大卫征讨以东，元帅约押前去埋葬阵亡的人，将以东的男子都杀了。他率领以色列人在那里住了六个月，直到杀光了以东的男子。那时，哈达年纪还小，他和他父亲的几个以东臣仆一起逃往埃及。
