They crouch and lie down like a lion, and as a lioness, who can stir him? Blessed is the one who blesses you, and cursed is the one who curses you!’”

I will bless those who bless you, but the one who treats you lightly I must curse, and all the families of the earth will bless one another by your name.”

Kings will be your children’s guardians; their princesses will nurse your children. With their faces to the ground they will bow down to you and they will lick the dirt on your feet. Then you will recognize that I am the LORD; those who wait patiently for me are not put to shame.

This is what the LORD says:“ The profit of Egypt and the revenue of Ethiopia, along with the Sabeans, those tall men, will be brought to you and become yours. They will walk behind you, coming along in chains. They will bow down to you and pray to you:‘ Truly God is with you; he has no peer; there is no other God!’”

So he said,“ Cursed be Canaan! The lowest of slaves he will be to his brothers.”He also said,“ Worthy of praise is the LORD, the God of Shem! May Canaan be the slave of Shem!

His dominion will be vast and he will bring immeasurable prosperity. He will rule on David’s throne and over David’s kingdom, establishing it and strengthening it by promoting justice and fairness, from this time forward and forevermore. The LORD’s intense devotion to his people will accomplish this.

I will indeed bless you, and I will greatly multiply your descendants so that they will be as countless as the stars in the sky or the grains of sand on the seashore. Your descendants will take possession of the strongholds of their enemies.Because you have obeyed me, all the nations of the earth will pronounce blessings on one another using the name of your descendants.’”

But the children struggled inside her, and she said,“ If it is going to be like this, I’m not so sure I want to be pregnant!” So she asked the LORD,and the LORD said to her,“ Two nations are in your womb, and two peoples will be separated from within you. One people will be stronger than the other, and the older will serve the younger.”

Isaac replied to Esau,“ Look! I have made him lord over you. I have made all his relatives his servants and provided him with grain and new wine. What is left that I can do for you, my son?”

Who is this who comes from Edom, dressed in bright red, coming from Bozrah? Who is this one wearing royal attire, who marches confidently because of his great strength?“ It is I, the one who announces vindication, and who is able to deliver!”Why are your clothes red? Why do you look like someone who has stomped on grapes in a vat?“ I have stomped grapes in the winepress all by myself; no one from the nations joined me. I stomped on them in my anger; I trampled them down in my rage. Their juice splashed on my garments, and stained all my clothes.For I looked forward to the day of vengeance, and then payback time arrived.I looked, but there was no one to help; I was shocked because there was no one offering support. So my right arm accomplished deliverance; my raging anger drove me on.I trampled nations in my anger, I made them drunk in my rage, I splashed their blood on the ground.”

During David’s campaign against Edom, Joab, the commander of the army, while on a mission to bury the dead, killed every male in Edom.For six months Joab and the entire Israelite army stayed there until they had exterminated every male in Edom.

Later David defeated the Philistines and subdued them. David took Metheg Ammah from the Philistines.He defeated the Moabites. He made them lie on the ground and then used a rope to measure them off. He put two-thirds of them to death and spared the other third. The Moabites became David’s subjects and brought tribute.David defeated King Hadadezer son of Rehob of Zobah when he came to reestablish his authority over the Euphrates River.David seized from him 1,700 charioteers and 20,000 infantrymen. David cut the hamstrings of all but a hundred of the chariot horses.The Arameans of Damascus came to help King Hadadezer of Zobah, but David killed 22,000 of the Arameans.David placed garrisons in the territory of the Arameans of Damascus; the Arameans became David’s subjects and brought tribute. The LORD protected David wherever he campaigned.David took the golden shields that belonged to Hadadezer’s servants and brought them to Jerusalem.From Tebah and Berothai, Hadadezer’s cities, King David took a great deal of bronze.When King Toi of Hamath heard that David had defeated the entire army of Hadadezer,he sent his son Joram to King David to extend his best wishes and to pronounce a blessing on him for his victory over Hadadezer, for Toi had been at war with Hadadezer. He brought with him various items made of silver, gold, and bronze.King David dedicated these things to the LORD, along with the dedicated silver and gold that he had taken from all the nations that he had subdued,including Aram, Moab, the Ammonites, the Philistines, and Amelek. This also included some of the plunder taken from King Hadadezer son of Rehob of Zobah.David became famous when he returned from defeating the Arameans in the Valley of Salt, he defeated 18,000 in all.He placed garrisons throughout Edom, and all the Edomites became David’s subjects. The LORD protected David wherever he campaigned.David reigned over all Israel; he guaranteed justice for all his people.Joab son of Zeruiah was general in command of the army; Jehoshaphat son of Ahilud was secretary;Zadok son of Ahitub and Ahimelech son of Abiathar were priests; Seraiah was scribe;Benaiah son of Jehoida supervised the Kerithites and Pelethites; and David’s sons were priests.

How can I curse one whom God has not cursed, or how can I denounce one whom the LORD has not denounced?

This is what the LORD, the protector of Israel, their Holy One, says to the one who is despised and rejected by nations, a servant of rulers:“ Kings will see and rise in respect, princes will bow down, because of the faithful LORD, the Holy One of Israel who has chosen you.”

In the days of those kings the God of heaven will raise up an everlasting kingdom that will not be destroyed and a kingdom that will not be left to another people. It will break in pieces and bring about the demise of all these kingdoms. But it will stand forever.You saw that a stone was cut from a mountain, but not by human hands; it smashed the iron, bronze, clay, silver, and gold into pieces. The great God has made known to the king what will occur in the future. The dream is certain, and its interpretation is reliable.”

Later the king of the Ammonites died and his son Hanun succeeded him.David said,“ I will express my loyalty to Hanun son of Nahash just as his father was loyal to me.” So David sent his servants with a message expressing sympathy over his father’s death. When David’s servants entered the land of the Ammonites,the Ammonite officials said to their lord Hanun,“ Do you really think David is trying to honor your father by sending these messengers to express his sympathy? No, David has sent his servants to you to get information about the city and spy on it so they can overthrow it!”So Hanun seized David’s servants and shaved off half of each one’s beard. He cut the lower part of their robes off so that their buttocks were exposed, and then sent them away.Messengers told David what had happened, so he summoned them, for the men were thoroughly humiliated. The king said,“ Stay in Jericho until your beards have grown again; then you may come back.”When the Ammonites realized that David was disgusted with them, they sent and hired 20,000 foot soldiers from Aram Beth Rehob and Aram Zobah, in addition to 1,000 men from the king of Maacah and 12,000 men from Ish-tob.When David heard the news, he sent Joab and the entire army to meet them.The Ammonites marched out and were deployed for battle at the entrance of the city gate, while the men from Aram Zobah, Rehob, Ish-tob, and Maacah were by themselves in the field.When Joab saw that the battle would be fought on two fronts, he chose some of Israel’s best men and deployed them against the Arameans.He put his brother Abishai in charge of the rest of the army and they were deployed against the Ammonites.Joab said,“ If the Arameans start to overpower me, you come to my rescue. If the Ammonites start to overpower you, I will come to your rescue.Be strong! Let’s fight bravely for the sake of our people and the cities of our God! The LORD will do what he decides is best!”So Joab and his men marched out to do battle with the Arameans, and they fled before him.When the Ammonites saw the Arameans flee, they fled before his brother Abishai and went into the city. Joab withdrew from fighting the Ammonites and returned to Jerusalem.When the Arameans realized that they had been defeated by Israel, they consolidated their forces.Then Hadadezer sent for Arameans from beyond the Euphrates River, and they came to Helam. Shobach, the general in command of Hadadezer’s army, led them.When David was informed, he gathered all Israel, crossed the Jordan River, and came to Helam. The Arameans deployed their forces against David and fought with him.The Arameans fled before Israel. David killed 700 Aramean charioteers and 40,000 foot soldiers. He also struck down Shobach, the general in command of the army, who died there.When all the kings who were subject to Hadadezer saw they were defeated by Israel, they made peace with Israel and became subjects of Israel. The Arameans were no longer willing to help the Ammonites.

Amaziah boldly led his army to the Valley of Salt, where he defeated 10,000 Edomites.The men of Judah captured 10,000 men alive. They took them to the top of a cliff and threw them over. All the captives fell to their death.Now the troops Amaziah had dismissed and had not allowed to fight in the battle raided the cities of Judah from Samaria to Beth Horon. They killed 3,000 people and carried off a large amount of plunder.When Amaziah returned from defeating the Edomites, he brought back the gods of the people of Seir and made them his personal gods. He bowed down before them and offered them sacrifices.

There we were, binding sheaves of grain in the middle of the field. Suddenly my sheaf rose up and stood upright and your sheaves surrounded my sheaf and bowed down to it!”

But Jacob said,“ Swear an oath to me now.” So Esau swore an oath to him and sold his birthright to Jacob.

“ I myself have installed my king on Zion, my holy hill.”The king says,“ I will announce the LORD’S decree. He said to me:‘ You are my son! This very day I have become your father!Ask me, and I will give you the nations as your inheritance, the ends of the earth as your personal property.You will break them with an iron scepter; you will smash them like a potter’s jar!’”

“ I have shown love to you,” says the LORD, but you say,“ How have you shown love to us?”“ Esau was Jacob’s brother,” the LORD explains,“ yet I chose Jacoband rejected Esau. I turned Esau’s mountains into a deserted wasteland and gave his territory to the wild jackals.”Edom says,“ Though we are devastated, we will once again build the ruined places.” So the LORD who rules over all responds,“ They indeed may build, but I will overthrow. They will be known as the land of evil, the people with whom the LORD is permanently displeased.Your eyes will see it, and then you will say,‘ May the LORD be magnified even beyond the border of Israel!’”

May he rule from sea to sea, and from the Euphrates River to the ends of the earth!

“ Look, a nation has come out of Egypt, and it covers the face of the earth. Come now and put a curse on them for me; perhaps I will be able to defeat them and drive them out.”But God said to Balaam,“ You must not go with them; you must not curse the people, for they are blessed.”

O God, you have rejected us. You suddenly turned on us in your anger. Please restore us!You made the earth quake; you split it open. Repair its breaches, for it is ready to fall.You have made your people experience hard times; you have made us drink intoxicating wine.You have given your loyal followers a rallying flag, so that they might seek safety from the bow.( Selah)Deliver by your power and answer me, so that the ones you love may be safe.God has spoken in his sanctuary:“ I will triumph! I will parcel out Shechem; the Valley of Succoth I will measure off.Gilead belongs to me, as does Manasseh! Ephraim is my helmet, Judah my royal scepter.Moab is my washbasin. I will make Edom serve me. I will shout in triumph over Philistia.”Who will lead me into the fortified city? Who will bring me to Edom?Have you not rejected us, O God? O God, you do not go into battle with our armies.Give us help against the enemy, for any help men might offer is futile.By God’s power we will conquer; he will trample down our enemies.

There was no king in Edom at this time; a governor ruled.

Judah, your brothers will praise you. Your hand will be on the neck of your enemies, your father’s sons will bow down before you.You are a lion’s cub, Judah, from the prey, my son, you have gone up. He crouches and lies down like a lion; like a lioness– who will rouse him?The scepter will not depart from Judah, nor the ruler’s staff from between his feet, until he comes to whom it belongs; the nations will obey him.

Though Judah was the strongest among his brothers and a leader descended from him, the right of the firstborn belonged to Joseph.)

( 5: 1) Solomon ruled all the kingdoms from the Euphrates River to the land of the Philistines, as far as the border of Egypt. These kingdoms paid tribute as Solomon’s subjects throughout his lifetime.

“ I have heard Moab’s taunts and the Ammonites’ insults. They taunted my people and verbally harassed those living in Judah.Therefore, as surely as I live,” says the LORD who commands armies, the God of Israel,“ be certain that Moab will become like Sodom and the Ammonites like Gomorrah. They will be overrun by weeds, filled with salt pits, and permanently desolate. Those of my people who are left will plunder their belongings; those who are left in Judah will take possession of their land.”

He has a name written on his clothing and on his thigh:“ King of kings and Lord of lords.”

And the king will answer them,‘ I tell you the truth, just as you did it for one of the least of these brothers or sisters of mine, you did it for me.’

Then he will answer them,‘ I tell you the truth, just as you did not do it for one of the least of these, you did not do it for me.’
