The Lord said to her,“ Two nations are in your womb, and two peoples from within you will be separated; one people will be stronger than the other, and the older will serve the younger.”

The Lord said to her,“ Two nations are in your body. Two tribes that are now inside you will be separated. One nation will be stronger than the other. The older son will serve the younger one.”

And the Lord told her,“ The sons in your womb will become two nations. From the very beginning, the two nations will be rivals. One nation will be stronger than the other; and your older son will serve your younger son.”

And the LORD said to her: Two nations are in your womb; two peoples will come from you and be separated. One people will be stronger than the other, and the older will serve the younger.

And the Lord said to her,“ Two nations are in your womb; And two peoples will be separated from your body; And one people will be stronger than the other; And the older will serve the younger.”

And the Lord said to her:“ Two nations are in your womb, Two peoples shall be separated from your body; One people shall be stronger than the other, And the older shall serve the younger.”

And Jehovah said unto her, Two nations are in thy womb, And two peoples shall be separated from thy bowels: And the one people shall be stronger than the other people; And the elder shall serve the younger.

And the Lord said to her: Two nations are in your womb; two people will come from you and be separated. One people will be stronger than the other, and the older will serve the younger.

And the LORD said unto her, Two nations[ are] in thy womb, and two manner of people shall be separated from thy bowels; and[ the one] people shall be stronger than[ the other] people; and the elder shall serve the younger.

and the LORD said to her,“ Two nations are in your womb, and two peoples will be separated from within you. One people will be stronger than the other, and the older will serve the younger.”

Yahweh said to her,“ Two nations are in your womb. Two peoples will be separated from your body. The one people will be stronger than the other people. The elder will serve the younger.”

Let peoples serve you, and nations bow down to you. Be lord over your brothers, and may your mother’s sons bow down to you. Cursed be everyone who curses you, and blessed be everyone who blesses you!”

By your sword you shall live, and you shall serve your brother; but when you grow restless you shall break his yoke from your neck.”

Then he put garrisons in Edom; throughout all Edom he put garrisons, and all the Edomites became David’s servants. And the Lord gave victory to David wherever he went.

And not only so, but also when Rebekah had conceived children by one man, our forefather Isaac,though they were not yet born and had done nothing either good or bad— in order that God’s purpose of election might continue, not because of works but because of him who calls—she was told,“ The older will serve the younger.”As it is written,“ Jacob I loved, but Esau I hated.”

“ I have loved you,” says the Lord. But you say,“ How have you loved us?”“ Is not Esau Jacob’s brother?” declares the Lord.“ Yet I have loved Jacobbut Esau I have hated. I have laid waste his hill country and left his heritage to jackals of the desert.”If Edom says,“ We are shattered but we will rebuild the ruins,” the Lord of hosts says,“ They may build, but I will tear down, and they will be called‘ the wicked country,’ and‘ the people with whom the Lord is angry forever.’”Your own eyes shall see this, and you shall say,“ Great is the Lord beyond the border of Israel!”

“ Thus says the Lord God: Because Edom acted revengefully against the house of Judah and has grievously offended in taking vengeance on them,therefore thus says the Lord God, I will stretch out my hand against Edom and cut off from it man and beast. And I will make it desolate; from Teman even to Dedan they shall fall by the sword.And I will lay my vengeance upon Edom by the hand of my people Israel, and they shall do in Edom according to my anger and according to my wrath, and they shall know my vengeance, declares the Lord God.

I will bless her, and moreover, I will give you a son by her. I will bless her, and she shall become nations; kings of peoples shall come from her.”

Moses sent messengers from Kadesh to the king of Edom:“ Thus says your brother Israel: You know all the hardship that we have met:

And they blessed Rebekah and said to her,“ Our sister, may you become thousands of ten thousands, and may your offspring possess the gate of those who hate him!”

And the messengers returned to Jacob, saying,“ We came to your brother Esau, and he is coming to meet you, and there are four hundred men with him.”

Concerning Edom. Thus says the Lord of hosts:“ Is wisdom no more in Teman? Has counsel perished from the prudent? Has their wisdom vanished?Flee, turn back, dwell in the depths, O inhabitants of Dedan! For I will bring the calamity of Esau upon him, the time when I punish him.If grape gatherers came to you, would they not leave gleanings? If thieves came by night, would they not destroy only enough for themselves?But I have stripped Esau bare; I have uncovered his hiding places, and he is not able to conceal himself. His children are destroyed, and his brothers, and his neighbors; and he is no more.Leave your fatherless children; I will keep them alive; and let your widows trust in me.”For thus says the Lord:“ If those who did not deserve to drink the cup must drink it, will you go unpunished? You shall not go unpunished, but you must drink.For I have sworn by myself, declares the Lord, that Bozrah shall become a horror, a taunt, a waste, and a curse, and all her cities shall be perpetual wastes.”I have heard a message from the Lord, and an envoy has been sent among the nations:“ Gather yourselves together and come against her, and rise up for battle!For behold, I will make you small among the nations, despised among mankind.The horror you inspire has deceived you, and the pride of your heart, you who live in the clefts of the rock, who hold the height of the hill. Though you make your nest as high as the eagle’s, I will bring you down from there, declares the Lord.“ Edom shall become a horror. Everyone who passes by it will be horrified and will hiss because of all its disasters.As when Sodom and Gomorrah and their neighboring cities were overthrown, says the Lord, no man shall dwell there, no man shall sojourn in her.Behold, like a lion coming up from the jungle of the Jordan against a perennial pasture, I will suddenly make him run away from her. And I will appoint over her whomever I choose. For who is like me? Who will summon me? What shepherd can stand before me?Therefore hear the plan that the Lord has made against Edom and the purposes that he has formed against the inhabitants of Teman: Even the little ones of the flock shall be dragged away. Surely their fold shall be appalled at their fate.At the sound of their fall the earth shall tremble; the sound of their cry shall be heard at the Red Sea.Behold, one shall mount up and fly swiftly like an eagle and spread his wings against Bozrah, and the heart of the warriors of Edom shall be in that day like the heart of a woman in her birth pains.”

These are the kings who reigned in the land of Edom, before any king reigned over the Israelites.

Who is this who comes from Edom, in crimsoned garments from Bozrah, he who is splendid in his apparel, marching in the greatness of his strength?“ It is I, speaking in righteousness, mighty to save.”Why is your apparel red, and your garments like his who treads in the winepress?“ I have trodden the winepress alone, and from the peoples no one was with me; I trod them in my anger and trampled them in my wrath; their lifeblood spattered on my garments, and stained all my apparel.For the day of vengeance was in my heart, and my year of redemption had come.I looked, but there was no one to help; I was appalled, but there was no one to uphold; so my own arm brought me salvation, and my wrath upheld me.I trampled down the peoples in my anger; I made them drunk in my wrath, and I poured out their lifeblood on the earth.”

Moab is my washbasin; upon Edom I cast my shoe; over Philistia I shout in triumph.”Who will bring me to the fortified city? Who will lead me to Edom?

Then he put garrisons in Edom, and all the Edomites became David’s servants. And the Lord gave victory to David wherever he went.

The vision of Obadiah. Thus says the Lord God concerning Edom: We have heard a report from the Lord, and a messenger has been sent among the nations:“ Rise up! Let us rise against her for battle!”Behold, I will make you small among the nations; you shall be utterly despised.The pride of your heart has deceived you, you who live in the clefts of the rock, in your lofty dwelling, who say in your heart,“ Who will bring me down to the ground?”Though you soar aloft like the eagle, though your nest is set among the stars, from there I will bring you down, declares the Lord.If thieves came to you, if plunderers came by night— how you have been destroyed!— would they not steal only enough for themselves? If grape gatherers came to you, would they not leave gleanings?How Esau has been pillaged, his treasures sought out!All your allies have driven you to your border; those at peace with you have deceived you; they have prevailed against you; those who eat your bread have set a trap beneath you— you have no understanding.Will I not on that day, declares the Lord, destroy the wise men out of Edom, and understanding out of Mount Esau?And your mighty men shall be dismayed, O Teman, so that every man from Mount Esau will be cut off by slaughter.Because of the violence done to your brother Jacob, shame shall cover you, and you shall be cut off forever.On the day that you stood aloof, on the day that strangers carried off his wealth and foreigners entered his gates and cast lots for Jerusalem, you were like one of them.But do not gloat over the day of your brother in the day of his misfortune; do not rejoice over the people of Judah in the day of their ruin; do not boast in the day of distress.Do not enter the gate of my people in the day of their calamity; do not gloat over his disaster in the day of his calamity; do not loot his wealth in the day of his calamity.Do not stand at the crossroads to cut off his fugitives; do not hand over his survivors in the day of distress.For the day of the Lord is near upon all the nations. As you have done, it shall be done to you; your deeds shall return on your own head.For as you have drunk on my holy mountain, so all the nations shall drink continually; they shall drink and swallow, and shall be as though they had never been.

The word of the Lord came to me:“ Son of man, set your face against Mount Seir, and prophesy against it,and say to it, Thus says the Lord God: Behold, I am against you, Mount Seir, and I will stretch out my hand against you, and I will make you a desolation and a waste.I will lay your cities waste, and you shall become a desolation, and you shall know that I am the Lord.Because you cherished perpetual enmity and gave over the people of Israel to the power of the sword at the time of their calamity, at the time of their final punishment,therefore, as I live, declares the Lord God, I will prepare you for blood, and blood shall pursue you; because you did not hate bloodshed, therefore blood shall pursue you.I will make Mount Seir a waste and a desolation, and I will cut off from it all who come and go.And I will fill its mountains with the slain. On your hills and in your valleys and in all your ravines those slain with the sword shall fall.I will make you a perpetual desolation, and your cities shall not be inhabited. Then you will know that I am the Lord.“ Because you said,‘ These two nations and these two countries shall be mine, and we will take possession of them’— although the Lord was there—therefore, as I live, declares the Lord God, I will deal with you according to the anger and envy that you showed because of your hatred against them. And I will make myself known among them, when I judge you.And you shall know that I am the Lord.“ I have heard all the revilings that you uttered against the mountains of Israel, saying,‘ They are laid desolate; they are given us to devour.’And you magnified yourselves against me with your mouth, and multiplied your words against me; I heard it.Thus says the Lord God: While the whole earth rejoices, I will make you desolate.As you rejoiced over the inheritance of the house of Israel, because it was desolate, so I will deal with you; you shall be desolate, Mount Seir, and all Edom, all of it. Then they will know that I am the Lord.

When the boys grew up, Esau was a skillful hunter, a man of the field, while Jacob was a quiet man, dwelling in tents.

For they conspire with one accord; against you they make a covenant—the tents of Edom and the Ishmaelites, Moab and the Hagrites,Gebal and Ammon and Amalek, Philistia with the inhabitants of Tyre;Asshur also has joined them; they are the strong arm of the children of Lot. SelahDo to them as you did to Midian, as to Sisera and Jabin at the river Kishon,who were destroyed at En-dor, who became dung for the ground.Make their nobles like Oreb and Zeeb, all their princes like Zebah and Zalmunna,who said,“ Let us take possession for ourselves of the pastures of God.”O my God, make them like whirling dust, like chaff before the wind.As fire consumes the forest, as the flame sets the mountains ablaze,so may you pursue them with your tempest and terrify them with your hurricane!

There was no king in Edom; a deputy was king.

Draw near, O nations, to hear, and give attention, O peoples! Let the earth hear, and all that fills it; the world, and all that comes from it.For the Lord is enraged against all the nations, and furious against all their host; he has devoted them to destruction, has given them over for slaughter.Their slain shall be cast out, and the stench of their corpses shall rise; the mountains shall flow with their blood.All the host of heaven shall rot away, and the skies roll up like a scroll. All their host shall fall, as leaves fall from the vine, like leaves falling from the fig tree.For my sword has drunk its fill in the heavens; behold, it descends for judgment upon Edom, upon the people I have devoted to destruction.The Lord has a sword; it is sated with blood; it is gorged with fat, with the blood of lambs and goats, with the fat of the kidneys of rams. For the Lord has a sacrifice in Bozrah, a great slaughter in the land of Edom.Wild oxen shall fall with them, and young steers with the mighty bulls. Their land shall drink its fill of blood, and their soil shall be gorged with fat.For the Lord has a day of vengeance, a year of recompense for the cause of Zion.And the streams of Edom shall be turned into pitch, and her soil into sulfur; her land shall become burning pitch.Night and day it shall not be quenched; its smoke shall go up forever. From generation to generation it shall lie waste; none shall pass through it forever and ever.But the hawk and the porcupine shall possess it, the owl and the raven shall dwell in it. He shall stretch the line of confusion over it, and the plumb line of emptiness.Its nobles— there is no one there to call it a kingdom, and all its princes shall be nothing.Thorns shall grow over its strongholds, nettles and thistles in its fortresses. It shall be the haunt of jackals, an abode for ostriches.And wild animals shall meet with hyenas; the wild goat shall cry to his fellow; indeed, there the night bird settles and finds for herself a resting place.There the owl nests and lays and hatches and gathers her young in her shadow; indeed, there the hawks are gathered, each one with her mate.Seek and read from the book of the Lord: Not one of these shall be missing; none shall be without her mate. For the mouth of the Lord has commanded, and his Spirit has gathered them.He has cast the lot for them; his hand has portioned it out to them with the line; they shall possess it forever; from generation to generation they shall dwell in it.

But Amaziah took courage and led out his people and went to the Valley of Salt and struck down 10,000 men of Seir.The men of Judah captured another 10,000 alive and took them to the top of a rock and threw them down from the top of the rock, and they were all dashed to pieces.

He himself went on before them, bowing himself to the ground seven times, until he came near to his brother.

“ Behold, my covenant is with you, and you shall be the father of a multitude of nations.

Thus says the Lord:“ For three transgressions of Edom, and for four, I will not revoke the punishment, because he pursued his brother with the sword and cast off all pity, and his anger tore perpetually, and he kept his wrath forever.So I will send a fire upon Teman, and it shall devour the strongholds of Bozrah.”
