“ Here I am, a stranger and a foreigner among you. Please sell me a piece of land so I can give my wife a proper burial.”

“我在你们中间是外人，是寄居的。求你们在这里给我一块地，我好埋葬我的死人，使她不在我眼前。”

我於爾中寄居為旅、請在此以片地予我、以為塋地、可葬我當前之死者、

“ I am a foreigner and stranger among you. Sell me some property for a burial site here so I can bury my dead.”

“ I’m an outsider. I’m a stranger among you. Sell me some property where I can bury those in my family who die. Then I can bury my wife.”

“ I am a sojourner and foreigner among you; give me property among you for a burying place, that I may bury my dead out of my sight.”

“ I am an alien residing among you. Give me burial property among you so that I can bury my dead.”

“ I am a stranger and a foreign resident among you; give me a burial site among you so that I may bury my dead out of my sight.”

“ I am a foreigner and a visitor among you. Give me property for a burial place among you, that I may bury my dead out of my sight.”

I am a stranger and a sojourner with you: give me a possession of a burying- place with you, that I may bury my dead out of my sight.

“ I am a foreign resident among you. Give me a burial site among you so that I can bury my dead.”

I[ am] a stranger and a sojourner with you: give me a possession of a buryingplace with you, that I may bury my dead out of my sight.

“ I am a temporary settler among you. Grant me ownership of a burial site among you so that I may bury my dead.”

“ I am a stranger and a foreigner living with you. Give me a possession of a burying- place with you, that I may bury my dead out of my sight.”

And I will give the entire land of Canaan, where you now live as a foreigner, to you and your descendants. It will be their possession forever, and I will be their God.”

And even when he reached the land God promised him, he lived there by faith— for he was like a foreigner, living in tents. And so did Isaac and Jacob, who inherited the same promise.

We are here for only a moment, visitors and strangers in the land as our ancestors were before us. Our days on earth are like a passing shadow, gone so soon without a trace.

I am only a foreigner in the land. Don’t hide your commands from me!

“ The land must never be sold on a permanent basis, for the land belongs to me. You are only foreigners and tenant farmers working for me.

“ But God gave him no inheritance here, not even one square foot of land. God did promise, however, that eventually the whole land would belong to Abraham and his descendants— even though he had no children yet.

Hear my prayer, O Lord! Listen to my cries for help! Don’t ignore my tears. For I am your guest— a traveler passing through, as my ancestors were before me.

This is the cave in the field of Machpelah, near Mamre in Canaan, that Abraham bought from Ephron the Hittite as a permanent burial site.

All these people died still believing what God had promised them. They did not receive what was promised, but they saw it all from a distance and welcomed it. They agreed that they were foreigners and nomads here on earth.Obviously people who say such things are looking forward to a country they can call their own.If they had longed for the country they came from, they could have gone back.But they were looking for a better place, a heavenly homeland. That is why God is not ashamed to be called their God, for he has prepared a city for them.

A man might have a hundred children and live to be very old. But if he finds no satisfaction in life and doesn’t even get a decent burial, it would have been better for him to be born dead.

Remember him before you become fearful of falling and worry about danger in the streets; before your hair turns white like an almond tree in bloom, and you drag along without energy like a dying grasshopper, and the caperberry no longer inspires sexual desire. Remember him before you near the grave, your everlasting home, when the mourners will weep at your funeral.

They carried his body to the land of Canaan and buried him in the cave in the field of Machpelah, near Mamre. This is the cave that Abraham had bought as a permanent burial site from Ephron the Hittite.

For then the dust will return to the earth, and the spirit will return to God who gave it.

Dear friends, I warn you as“ temporary residents and foreigners” to keep away from worldly desires that wage war against your very souls.

Jacob replied,“ I have traveled this earth for 130 hard years. But my life has been short compared to the lives of my ancestors.”

He said this when they were few in number, a tiny group of strangers in Canaan.They wandered from nation to nation, from one kingdom to another.

By the sweat of your brow will you have food to eat until you return to the ground from which you were made. For you were made from dust, and to dust you will return.”

And I know you are sending me to my death— the destination of all who live.
