因为经上记着：亚伯拉罕有两个儿子，一个出于女仆，一个出于自由女人。

同样因着信，不能生育的撒拉，自己虽然过了年龄，还是领受了怀孕生子的能力，原来她认为向她应许的那一位是信实的。

而我的约，我要与以撒确立。这以撒，就是撒拉要在明年所定的时期为你生的儿子。”

神说：“不，你的妻子撒拉将为你生一个儿子，你要给他起名为以撒。我要与他确立我的约，作为他后裔永远的约。

在耶和华还有难成的事吗？到了所定的时期，明年这时候，我必回到你这里；那时撒拉就会有一个儿子。”

神又赐给亚伯拉罕割礼的约。这样，亚伯拉罕生了以撒，第八天给他行了割礼。后来以撒生了雅各，雅各生了十二位先祖。

其中一位说：“明年这时候，我一定回到你这里。看哪，你的妻子撒拉将会有一个儿子！”当时撒拉正在那人后面的帐篷入口听着。

原来所应许的话是这样的：“到明年这时候我要来，撒拉会生一个儿子。”

这些日子以后，他的妻子伊莉莎白怀了孕，隐居了五个月。她说：“为了除去我在人间的耻辱，主在这些眷顾的日子里，这样看待了我。”

你看，你的亲戚伊莉莎白虽然年老，也怀了男胎；那被称为不能生育的，现在已有六个月的身孕了。
