神說：“你的妻子撒拉，真的要為你生一個兒子，你要給他起名叫以撒，我要與他堅立我的約，作他後裔的永約。

耶和華豈有難成的事嗎？到明年這個時候，我要回到你這裡來，那時，撒拉必生一個兒子。”

神也賜他割禮為約。這樣，亞伯拉罕生了以撒，第八天就給他行了割禮。後來，以撒生雅各，雅各生了十二位祖先。

其中一位說：“到明年這個時候，我必回到你這裡來。那時，你的妻子撒拉必生一個兒子。”撒拉在那人後面的帳棚門口，也聽見了這話。

因為所應許的話是這樣：“明年這個時候我要來，撒拉必定生一個兒子。”

過了幾天，他妻子以利沙伯懷了孕，隱藏了五個月，說：“主在眷顧的日子，這樣看待我，要把我在人間的羞恥除掉。”

你看，你親戚以利沙伯，被稱為不生育的，在老年也懷了男胎，現在已是第六個月了，

以利沙說：“明年這個時分，時候到了，你必懷抱一個兒子。”她說：“神人哪！不要欺哄你的婢女。”這婦人果然懷了孕，到明年這個時分，時候到了，她就生了一個兒子，正如以利沙對她所說的。
