她瑪見示拉已經長大，卻還沒有娶她為妻，就脫去她寡婦的衣裳，用面紗蒙着，蓋住自己，坐在往亭拿的路上，伊拿印城門口。猶大看見她，以為是妓女，因為她蒙着臉。猶大就轉到路邊她那裏，說：「來吧！讓我與你同寢。」他並不知道她就是他的媳婦。她瑪說：「你要與我同寢，把甚麼給我呢？」猶大說：「我從羊羣裏取一隻小山羊，派人送來給你。」她瑪說：「在未送之前，你能給我一個信物嗎？」他說：「我給你甚麼信物呢？」她瑪說：「你的印、你的帶子和你手裏的杖。」於是猶大給了她，與她同寢，她就從猶大懷了孕。她瑪起來走了，除去面紗，照常穿上寡婦的衣裳。猶大託他朋友亞杜蘭人送一隻小山羊去，要從那女人手裏取回信物，卻找不到她。他問那地方的人說：「伊拿印路旁的神廟娼妓在哪裏？」他們說：「這裏沒有神廟娼妓。」他回到猶大那裏說：「我找不到她，並且那地方的人說：『這裏沒有神廟娼妓。』」猶大說：「讓她拿去吧，免得我們被人譏笑。看哪，我把這小山羊送去了，可是你找不到她。」大約過了三個月，有人告訴猶大說：「你的媳婦她瑪行淫，並且，看哪，她因行淫而懷了孕。」猶大說：「拉她出來，把她燒了！」她瑪被拉出來的時候，就派人到她公公那裏，對他說：「這些東西是誰的，我就是從誰懷了孕。」她又說：「請你認一認，這印、這帶子和這杖是誰的？」猶大承認說：「她比我更有理，因為我沒有把她給我的兒子示拉。」猶大再也不跟她同寢。她瑪生產的時候到了，看哪，腹裏懷的是雙胞胎。生產的時候，一個孩子伸出手來；接生婆拿紅線綁在他手上，說：「這是頭生的。」這孩子把手收回去，看哪，他哥哥生出來了；接生婆說：「你竟然為自己衝出一個裂縫！」於是，他的名字叫法勒斯。後來，那手上有紅線的兄弟也生出來，他的名字叫謝拉。

面向所多瑪和蛾摩拉，以及平原全地觀望。他觀看，看哪，那地有濃煙上騰，好像燒窰的濃煙。

猶大對俄南說：「你當與你哥哥的妻子同房，向她盡你的本分，為你哥哥生子立後。」俄南知道如果與嫂嫂同房，所生的孩子不屬於自己，就洩在地上，不為哥哥生子立後。

彼得不知道說甚麼才好，因為他們很害怕。
