塔瑪爾見示拉已經長大，而自己卻沒有被許配給示拉為妻，就把自己寡婦的衣服脫去，用面紗蒙臉，又偽裝好，坐在伊納因城門口，就在去亭拿的路上。猶大看見她，以為她是妓女，因為她蒙著臉。猶大就轉向路旁的塔瑪爾，說：「來吧！讓我與你同房。」原來他不知道那女人是自己的兒媳婦。塔瑪爾說：「如果你與我同房，你會給我什麼呢？」猶大說：「我會從羊群中送一隻小山羊來。」塔瑪爾說：「在你送來之前，你能不能給個信物？」他說：「我給你什麼信物呢？」塔瑪爾說：「你的印章、你的帶子和你手中的杖。」猶大就給了她，與她同房，她就藉著猶大懷了孕。塔瑪爾起來走了，拿掉面紗，又穿上自己寡婦的衣服。猶大經他亞杜蘭朋友的手送去一隻小山羊，要從那女人的手中取回信物。他的朋友卻找不到那女人，就問那地方的人說：「那個在伊納因路旁的廟妓在哪裡呢？」他們說：「這裡從來沒有廟妓。」他回到猶大那裡，說：「我找不到她，那地方的人還說：『這裡從來沒有廟妓。』」猶大說：「讓她拿去吧，免得我們成為笑柄。看哪，我把這隻小山羊送去了，只是你找不到她。」大約過了三個月，有人告訴猶大說：「你的兒媳婦塔瑪爾犯了姦淫，看哪，她因行淫而懷了孕！」猶大就說：「把她帶出來燒死！」塔瑪爾被帶出來的時候，她派人到她公公那裡，說：「這些東西是誰的，我就是藉著誰懷的孕！」她又說：「請你確認！這印章、帶子和杖是誰的呢？」猶大認出那些東西，就說：「她比我更顯為義，因為我沒有把她嫁給我兒子示拉。」猶大就再沒有與她同寢。到塔瑪爾生產的時候，看哪，她的腹中竟是一對雙胞胎！她正在生的時候，其中一個孩子伸出一隻手來，接生婆就拿了一根紅線繫在他手上，說：「這個是首先出來的。」這孩子把手一收回去，看哪，他的兄弟卻出來了！接生婆說：「你竟為自己裂開一個裂口！」猶大就給他起名為法勒斯。後來法勒斯的兄弟，就是那手上有紅線的也出來了，猶大就給他起名為謝拉赫。

他俯瞰所多瑪和格摩拉，以及平原全地；看哪，只見那地有煙上騰，像窯爐的煙那樣！

猶大對俄南說：「你當與你哥哥的妻子同房，向她盡小叔子的義務，為你的哥哥立後。」俄南知道即使有了後裔也不歸自己，於是每當與哥哥的妻子同房，就把精液泄在地上，免得為他哥哥立後。

其實彼得不知道說什麼才好，因為他們都非常害怕。
