塔玛尔见示拉已经长大，而自己却没有被许配给示拉为妻，就把自己寡妇的衣服脱去，用面纱蒙脸，又伪装好，坐在尹阿印城门口，就在去亭拿的路上。犹大看见她，以为她是妓女，因为她蒙着脸。犹大就转向路旁的塔玛尔，说：“来吧！让我与你同房。”原来他不知道那女人是自己的儿媳妇。塔玛尔说：“如果你与我同房，你会给我什么呢？”犹大说：“我会从羊群中送一只小山羊来。”塔玛尔说：“在你送来之前，你能不能给个信物？”他说：“我给你什么信物呢？”塔玛尔说：“你的印章、你的带子和你手中的杖。”犹大就给了她，与她同房，她就藉着犹大怀了孕。塔玛尔起来走了，拿掉面纱，又穿上自己寡妇的衣服。犹大经他亚杜兰朋友的手送去一只小山羊，要从那女人的手中取回信物。他的朋友却找不到那女人，就问那地方的人说：“那个在尹阿印路旁的庙妓在哪里呢？”他们说：“这里从来没有庙妓。”他回到犹大那里，说：“我找不到她，那地方的人还说：‘这里从来没有庙妓。’”犹大说：“让她拿去吧，免得我们成为笑柄。看哪，我把这只小山羊送去了，只是你找不到她。”大约过了三个月，有人告诉犹大说：“你的儿媳妇塔玛尔犯了奸淫，看哪，她因行淫而怀了孕！”犹大就说：“把她带出来烧死！”塔玛尔被带出来的时候，她派人到她公公那里，说：“这些东西是谁的，我就是藉着谁怀的孕！”她又说：“请你确认！这印章、带子和杖是谁的呢？”犹大认出那些东西，就说：“她比我更显为义，因为我没有把她嫁给我儿子示拉。”犹大就再没有与她同寝。到塔玛尔生产的时候，看哪，她的腹中竟是一对双胞胎！她正在生的时候，其中一个孩子伸出一只手来，接生婆就拿了一根红线系在他手上，说：“这个是首先出来的。”这孩子把手一收回去，看哪，他的兄弟却出来了！接生婆说：“你竟为自己裂开一个裂口！”犹大就给他起名为法勒斯。后来法勒斯的兄弟，就是那手上有红线的也出来了，犹大就给他起名为谢拉赫。

他俯瞰所多玛和格摩拉，以及平原全地；看哪，只见那地有烟上腾，像窑炉的烟那样！

犹大对俄南说：“你当与你哥哥的妻子同房，向她尽小叔子的义务，为你的哥哥立后。”俄南知道即使有了后裔也不归自己，于是每当与哥哥的妻子同房，就把精液泄在地上，免得为他哥哥立后。

其实彼得不知道说什么才好，因为他们都非常害怕。
