Then God said to him,“ I am the sovereign God. Be fruitful and multiply! A nation– even a company of nations– will descend from you; kings will be among your descendants!

I will make you extremely fruitful. I will make nations of you, and kings will descend from you.

Then I will make you into a great nation, and I will bless you, and I will make your name great, so that you will exemplify divine blessing.

One of them said,“ I will surely return to you when the season comes round again, and your wife Sarah will have a son!”( Now Sarah was listening at the entrance to the tent, not far behind him.Abraham and Sarah were old and advancing in years; Sarah had long since passed menopause.)So Sarah laughed to herself, thinking,“ After I am worn out will I have pleasure, especially when my husband is old too?”The LORD said to Abraham,“ Why did Sarah laugh and say,‘ Will I really have a child when I am old?’Is anything impossible for the LORD? I will return to you when the season comes round again and Sarah will have a son.”

For this is what the promise declared:“ About a year from now I will return and Sarah will have a son.”

like Sarah who obeyed Abraham, calling him lord. You become her children when you do what is good and have no fear in doing so.

But the Jerusalem above is free, and she is our mother.For it is written:“ Rejoice, O barren woman who does not bear children; break forth and shout, you who have no birth pains, because the children of the desolate woman are more numerous than those of the woman who has a husband.”But you, brothers and sisters, are children of the promise like Isaac.But just as at that time the one born by natural descent persecuted the one born according to the Spirit, so it is now.But what does the scripture say?“ Throw out the slave woman and her son, for the son of the slave woman will not share the inheritance with the son” of the free woman.Therefore, brothers and sisters, we are not children of the slave woman but of the free woman.

God blessed them and said to them,“ Be fruitful and multiply! Fill the earth and subdue it! Rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air and every creature that moves on the ground.”

They blessed Rebekah with these words:“ Our sister, may you become the mother of thousands of ten thousands! May your descendants possess the strongholds of their enemies.”

Kings will be your children’s guardians; their princesses will nurse your children. With their faces to the ground they will bow down to you and they will lick the dirt on your feet. Then you will recognize that I am the LORD; those who wait patiently for me are not put to shame.
