I will make your offspring like the dust of the earth, so that if anyone could count the dust, then your offspring could be counted.

I will make them like the dust of the earth. Can dust be counted? If it can, then your family can be counted.

And I will give you so many descendants that, like the dust of the earth, they cannot be counted!

But you said,‘ I will surely do you good, and make your offspring as the sand of the sea, which cannot be numbered for multitude.’”

I will surely bless you, and I will surely multiply your offspring as the stars of heaven and as the sand that is on the seashore. And your offspring shall possess the gate of his enemies,

And your servant is in the midst of your people whom you have chosen, a great people, too many to be numbered or counted for multitude.

And he brought him outside and said,“ Look toward heaven, and number the stars, if you are able to number them.” Then he said to him,“ So shall your offspring be.”

Remember Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, your servants, to whom you swore by your own self, and said to them,‘ I will multiply your offspring as the stars of heaven, and all this land that I have promised I will give to your offspring, and they shall inherit it forever.’”

Abraham took another wife, whose name was Keturah.She bore him Zimran, Jokshan, Medan, Midian, Ishbak, and Shuah.Jokshan fathered Sheba and Dedan. The sons of Dedan were Asshurim, Letushim, and Leummim.The sons of Midian were Ephah, Epher, Hanoch, Abida, and Eldaah. All these were the children of Keturah.Abraham gave all he had to Isaac.But to the sons of his concubines Abraham gave gifts, and while he was still living he sent them away from his son Isaac, eastward to the east country.These are the days of the years of Abraham’s life, 175 years.Abraham breathed his last and died in a good old age, an old man and full of years, and was gathered to his people.Isaac and Ishmael his sons buried him in the cave of Machpelah, in the field of Ephron the son of Zohar the Hittite, east of Mamre,the field that Abraham purchased from the Hittites. There Abraham was buried, with Sarah his wife.After the death of Abraham, God blessed Isaac his son. And Isaac settled at Beer-lahai-roi.These are the generations of Ishmael, Abraham’s son, whom Hagar the Egyptian, Sarah’s servant, bore to Abraham.These are the names of the sons of Ishmael, named in the order of their birth: Nebaioth, the firstborn of Ishmael; and Kedar, Adbeel, Mibsam,Mishma, Dumah, Massa,Hadad, Tema, Jetur, Naphish, and Kedemah.These are the sons of Ishmael and these are their names, by their villages and by their encampments, twelve princes according to their tribes.( These are the years of the life of Ishmael: 137 years. He breathed his last and died, and was gathered to his people.)They settled from Havilah to Shur, which is opposite Egypt in the direction of Assyria. He settled over against all his kinsmen.These are the generations of Isaac, Abraham’s son: Abraham fathered Isaac,and Isaac was forty years old when he took Rebekah, the daughter of Bethuel the Aramean of Paddan-aram, the sister of Laban the Aramean, to be his wife.And Isaac prayed to the Lord for his wife, because she was barren. And the Lord granted his prayer, and Rebekah his wife conceived.The children struggled together within her, and she said,“ If it is thus, why is this happening to me?” So she went to inquire of the Lord.And the Lord said to her,“ Two nations are in your womb, and two peoples from within you shall be divided; the one shall be stronger than the other, the older shall serve the younger.”When her days to give birth were completed, behold, there were twins in her womb.The first came out red, all his body like a hairy cloak, so they called his name Esau.Afterward his brother came out with his hand holding Esau’s heel, so his name was called Jacob. Isaac was sixty years old when she bore them.When the boys grew up, Esau was a skillful hunter, a man of the field, while Jacob was a quiet man, dwelling in tents.Isaac loved Esau because he ate of his game, but Rebekah loved Jacob.Once when Jacob was cooking stew, Esau came in from the field, and he was exhausted.And Esau said to Jacob,“ Let me eat some of that red stew, for I am exhausted!”( Therefore his name was called Edom.)Jacob said,“ Sell me your birthright now.”Esau said,“ I am about to die; of what use is a birthright to me?”Jacob said,“ Swear to me now.” So he swore to him and sold his birthright to Jacob.Then Jacob gave Esau bread and lentil stew, and he ate and drank and rose and went his way. Thus Esau despised his birthright.

seeing that Abraham shall surely become a great and mighty nation, and all the nations of the earth shall be blessed in him?

Judah and Israel were as many as the sand by the sea. They ate and drank and were happy.

After this I looked, and behold, a great multitude that no one could number, from every nation, from all tribes and peoples and languages, standing before the throne and before the Lamb, clothed in white robes, with palm branches in their hands,

The Lord your God has multiplied you, and behold, you are today as numerous as the stars of heaven.

Then he said,“ I am God, the God of your father. Do not be afraid to go down to Egypt, for there I will make you into a great nation.

As for Ishmael, I have heard you; behold, I have blessed him and will make him fruitful and multiply him greatly. He shall father twelve princes, and I will make him into a great nation.

God Almighty bless you and make you fruitful and multiply you, that you may become a company of peoples.

This was the muster of them by fathers’ houses: Of Judah, the commanders of thousands: Adnah the commander, with 300,000 mighty men of valor;and next to him Jehohanan the commander, with 280,000;and next to him Amasiah the son of Zichri, a volunteer for the service of the Lord, with 200,000 mighty men of valor.Of Benjamin: Eliada, a mighty man of valor, with 200,000 men armed with bow and shield;and next to him Jehozabad with 180,000 armed for war.

Therefore from one man, and him as good as dead, were born descendants as many as the stars of heaven and as many as the innumerable grains of sand by the seashore.

And I will make of you a great nation, and I will bless you and make your name great, so that you will be a blessing.I will bless those who bless you, and him who dishonors you I will curse, and in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed.”

For they would come up with their livestock and their tents; they would come like locusts in number— both they and their camels could not be counted— so that they laid waste the land as they came in.

And I will make a nation of the son of the slave woman also, because he is your offspring.”

David did not count those below twenty years of age, for the Lord had promised to make Israel as many as the stars of heaven.

I will multiply your offspring as the stars of heaven and will give to your offspring all these lands. And in your offspring all the nations of the earth shall be blessed,

And God said to him,“ I am God Almighty: be fruitful and multiply. A nation and a company of nations shall come from you, and kings shall come from your own body.

These are the generations of Esau( that is, Edom).Esau took his wives from the Canaanites: Adah the daughter of Elon the Hittite, Oholibamah the daughter of Anah the daughter of Zibeon the Hivite,and Basemath, Ishmael’s daughter, the sister of Nebaioth.And Adah bore to Esau, Eliphaz; Basemath bore Reuel;and Oholibamah bore Jeush, Jalam, and Korah. These are the sons of Esau who were born to him in the land of Canaan.Then Esau took his wives, his sons, his daughters, and all the members of his household, his livestock, all his beasts, and all his property that he had acquired in the land of Canaan. He went into a land away from his brother Jacob.For their possessions were too great for them to dwell together. The land of their sojournings could not support them because of their livestock.So Esau settled in the hill country of Seir.( Esau is Edom.)These are the generations of Esau the father of the Edomites in the hill country of Seir.These are the names of Esau’s sons: Eliphaz the son of Adah the wife of Esau, Reuel the son of Basemath the wife of Esau.The sons of Eliphaz were Teman, Omar, Zepho, Gatam, and Kenaz.( Timna was a concubine of Eliphaz, Esau’s son; she bore Amalek to Eliphaz.) These are the sons of Adah, Esau’s wife.These are the sons of Reuel: Nahath, Zerah, Shammah, and Mizzah. These are the sons of Basemath, Esau’s wife.These are the sons of Oholibamah the daughter of Anah the daughter of Zibeon, Esau’s wife: she bore to Esau Jeush, Jalam, and Korah.These are the chiefs of the sons of Esau. The sons of Eliphaz the firstborn of Esau: the chiefs Teman, Omar, Zepho, Kenaz,Korah, Gatam, and Amalek; these are the chiefs of Eliphaz in the land of Edom; these are the sons of Adah.These are the sons of Reuel, Esau’s son: the chiefs Nahath, Zerah, Shammah, and Mizzah; these are the chiefs of Reuel in the land of Edom; these are the sons of Basemath, Esau’s wife.These are the sons of Oholibamah, Esau’s wife: the chiefs Jeush, Jalam, and Korah; these are the chiefs born of Oholibamah the daughter of Anah, Esau’s wife.These are the sons of Esau( that is, Edom), and these are their chiefs.These are the sons of Seir the Horite, the inhabitants of the land: Lotan, Shobal, Zibeon, Anah,Dishon, Ezer, and Dishan; these are the chiefs of the Horites, the sons of Seir in the land of Edom.The sons of Lotan were Hori and Hemam; and Lotan’s sister was Timna.These are the sons of Shobal: Alvan, Manahath, Ebal, Shepho, and Onam.These are the sons of Zibeon: Aiah and Anah; he is the Anah who found the hot springs in the wilderness, as he pastured the donkeys of Zibeon his father.These are the children of Anah: Dishon and Oholibamah the daughter of Anah.These are the sons of Dishon: Hemdan, Eshban, Ithran, and Cheran.These are the sons of Ezer: Bilhan, Zaavan, and Akan.These are the sons of Dishan: Uz and Aran.These are the chiefs of the Horites: the chiefs Lotan, Shobal, Zibeon, Anah,Dishon, Ezer, and Dishan; these are the chiefs of the Horites, chief by chief in the land of Seir.These are the kings who reigned in the land of Edom, before any king reigned over the Israelites.Bela the son of Beor reigned in Edom, the name of his city being Dinhabah.Bela died, and Jobab the son of Zerah of Bozrah reigned in his place.Jobab died, and Husham of the land of the Temanites reigned in his place.Husham died, and Hadad the son of Bedad, who defeated Midian in the country of Moab, reigned in his place, the name of his city being Avith.Hadad died, and Samlah of Masrekah reigned in his place.Samlah died, and Shaul of Rehoboth on the Euphrates reigned in his place.Shaul died, and Baal-hanan the son of Achbor reigned in his place.Baal-hanan the son of Achbor died, and Hadar reigned in his place, the name of his city being Pau; his wife’s name was Mehetabel, the daughter of Matred, daughter of Mezahab.These are the names of the chiefs of Esau, according to their clans and their dwelling places, by their names: the chiefs Timna, Alvah, Jetheth,Oholibamah, Elah, Pinon,Kenaz, Teman, Mibzar,Magdiel, and Iram; these are the chiefs of Edom( that is, Esau, the father of Edom), according to their dwelling places in the land of their possession.

And Joab gave the sum of the numbering of the people to David. In all Israel there were 1,100,000 men who drew the sword, and in Judah 470,000 who drew the sword.

As the host of heaven cannot be numbered and the sands of the sea cannot be measured, so I will multiply the offspring of David my servant, and the Levitical priests who minister to me.”

I will bless her, and moreover, I will give you a son by her. I will bless her, and she shall become nations; kings of peoples shall come from her.”

Oh that you had paid attention to my commandments! Then your peace would have been like a river, and your righteousness like the waves of the sea;your offspring would have been like the sand, and your descendants like its grains; their name would never be cut off or destroyed from before me.”

For whenever the Israelites planted crops, the Midianites and the Amalekites and the people of the East would come up against them.

That is why it depends on faith, in order that the promise may rest on grace and be guaranteed to all his offspring— not only to the adherent of the law but also to the one who shares the faith of Abraham, who is the father of us all,as it is written,“ I have made you the father of many nations”— in the presence of the God in whom he believed, who gives life to the dead and calls into existence the things that do not exist.In hope he believed against hope, that he should become the father of many nations, as he had been told,“ So shall your offspring be.”

But the people of Israel were fruitful and increased greatly; they multiplied and grew exceedingly strong, so that the land was filled with them.

I will make you exceedingly fruitful, and I will make you into nations, and kings shall come from you.
