“ You and I are Jews by birth, not‘ sinners’ like the Gentiles.

“ We, being Jews by nature, and not Gentile sinners,

Once we, too, were foolish and disobedient. We were misled and became slaves to many lusts and pleasures. Our lives were full of evil and envy, and we hated each other.

All of us used to live that way, following the passionate desires and inclinations of our sinful nature. By our very nature we were subject to God’s anger, just like everyone else.

Don’t forget that you Gentiles used to be outsiders. You were called“ uncircumcised heathens” by the Jews, who were proud of their circumcision, even though it affected only their bodies and not their hearts.In those days you were living apart from Christ. You were excluded from citizenship among the people of Israel, and you did not know the covenant promises God had made to them. You lived in this world without God and without hope.

Well then, should we conclude that we Jews are better than others? No, not at all, for we have already shown that all people, whether Jews or Gentiles, are under the power of sin.

But when he saw many Pharisees and Sadducees coming to watch him baptize, he denounced them.“ You brood of snakes!” he exclaimed.“ Who warned you to flee the coming wrath?Prove by the way you live that you have repented of your sins and turned to God.Don’t just say to each other,‘ We’re safe, for we are descendants of Abraham.’ That means nothing, for I tell you, God can create children of Abraham from these very stones.

though I could have confidence in my own effort if anyone could. Indeed, if others have reason for confidence in their own efforts, I have even more!

“ But the Lord said to me,‘ Go, for I will send you far away to the Gentiles!’”

“ Our father is Abraham!” they declared.“ No,” Jesus replied,“ for if you were really the children of Abraham, you would follow his example.Instead, you are trying to kill me because I told you the truth, which I heard from God. Abraham never did such a thing.No, you are imitating your real father.” They replied,“ We aren’t illegitimate children! God himself is our true Father.”

and she begged him to cast out the demon from her daughter. Since she was a Gentile, born in Syrian Phoenicia,Jesus told her,“ First I should feed the children— my own family, the Jews. It isn’t right to take food from the children and throw it to the dogs.”She replied,“ That’s true, Lord, but even the dogs under the table are allowed to eat the scraps from the children’s plates.”

But when the Pharisees saw this, they asked his disciples,“ Why does your teacher eat with such scum?”

And the Lord sent you on a mission and told you,‘ Go and completely destroy the sinners, the Amalekites, until they are all dead.’

So the promise is received by faith. It is given as a free gift. And we are all certain to receive it, whether or not we live according to the law of Moses, if we have faith like Abraham’s. For Abraham is the father of all who believe.
