For you have heard of my previous way of life in Judaism, how intensely I persecuted the church of God and tried to destroy it.

You have heard how I lived earlier in my Jewish way of life. With all my strength I attacked the church of God. I tried to destroy it.

掃羅卻殘害教會，挨家挨戶地進去，拉着男女關在監裏。

保羅說：「我原是猶太人，生在基利家的大數，但在這城裏長大，在迦瑪列門下按着我們祖宗嚴緊的律法受教，熱心事奉神，就如你們大家今日一樣。我也曾迫害信奉這道路的人，置他們於死地，無論男女都捆綁，關在監裏。這是大祭司和議會的眾長老都可以給我作證的。我又從他們那裏領了致弟兄們的書信，往大馬士革去，要把在那裏的信徒綁起來，帶到耶路撒冷受刑。」

我原是使徒中最小的，不配稱為使徒，因為我曾迫害過神的教會。

掃羅到了耶路撒冷，想與門徒結交，大家卻都怕他，不信他是門徒。

凡聽見的人都很驚奇，說：「在耶路撒冷殘害求告這名的不就是這個人嗎？他不是到這裏來要捆綁他們，帶到祭司長那裏去嗎？」

「我自幼為人如何，從起初在本國的同胞中，以及在耶路撒冷，所有的猶太人都知道。他們若肯作見證，就知道我從起初是按着我們教中最嚴緊的教門作了法利賽人。

掃羅不斷用威嚇兇悍的口氣向主的門徒說話。他去見大祭司，要求發信給大馬士革的各會堂，若是找着信奉這道的人，無論男女，都准他捆綁帶到耶路撒冷。

「從前我自己認為必須竭力反對拿撒勒人耶穌的名，我在耶路撒冷也曾這樣做過；我不但從祭司長得了權柄，把許多聖徒收在監裏，而且他們被殺，我也表示贊成。在各會堂，我屢次用刑強迫他們說褻瀆的話，我非常厭惡他們，甚至追逼他們，直到外邦的城鎮。」

亞拿尼亞回答：「主啊，我聽見許多人講到這個人，說他怎樣在耶路撒冷多多苦待你的聖徒，並且他在這裏有從祭司長得來的權柄，要捆綁一切求告你名的人。」

我從前是褻瀆、迫害、侮慢神的人；然而我還蒙了憐憫，因為我是在不信、不明白的時候做的。

就熱心說，我是迫害教會的；就律法上的義說，我是無可指責的。

掃羅也贊同處死他。從那一天開始，耶路撒冷的教會遭受到大迫害，除了使徒以外，眾門徒都分散在猶太和撒瑪利亞各處。
