扫罗却残害教会，逐家进去，连男带女拉去坐监。

“我是犹太人，生在基利家的大数，在城里长大，按照我们祖宗律法的严格要求，在迦玛列门下受教，我为神热心，好像你们大家今天一样。我曾经迫害信奉这道的人直至死地，把男男女女都捆绑起来，送进监狱，这是大祭司和全公议会都可以给我作证的。我也从他们那里得到了写给众弟兄的信，就去大马士革，要把那里的人捆绑起来，带到耶路撒冷接受惩罚。

我原是使徒中最小的，本来没有资格称为使徒，因为我曾经迫害神的教会。

扫罗到了耶路撒冷，想要接近门徒，但大家都怕他，不信他是个门徒。

听见的人都很惊奇，说：“在耶路撒冷残害求告这名的，不是这个人吗？他来这里不是要缉拿他们交给祭司长吗？”

我从幼年到现在，在本国、在耶路撒冷为人怎样，犹太人都知道。如果他们肯作证的话，他们是早就知道，我是按着我们祖宗最严格的教派，过着法利赛人的生活。

扫罗仍向主的门徒发恐吓凶杀的话。他到大祭司那里，要求他发公函给大马士革各会堂，如果发现奉行这道的人，准他连男带女缉拿到耶路撒冷。

从前，我也认为应该多方敌对拿撒勒人耶稣的名。后来就在耶路撒冷这样作了。我得到了众祭司长授权，把许多圣徒关在监里，并且他们被杀的时候，我也表示同意。我在各会堂里多次用刑强迫他们说亵渎的话；我非常愤恨他们，甚至追到国外的城巿去迫害他们。

但亚拿尼亚回答：“主啊，我听见许多人说起这个人，他在耶路撒冷作了许多苦害你圣徒的事；并且他在这里得到祭司长的授权，要捆绑所有求告你名的人。”

我从前是亵渎神的、迫害人的、凌辱人的，然而我还蒙了怜悯，因为我是在不信的时候，由于无知而作的。

按着热诚来说，我是迫害教会的；按着律法上的义来说，我是无可指摘的。

司提反被害，扫罗也欣然同意。从那天起，耶路撒冷的教会大受迫害；除了使徒以外，所有的人都分散到犹太和撒玛利亚各地。
