In the seventh year of King Artaxerxes, Ezra brought up to Jerusalem some of the Israelites and some of the priests, the Levites, the attendants, the gatekeepers, and the temple servants.

Some of the Israelites, including priests, Levites, musicians, gatekeepers and temple servants, also came up to Jerusalem in the seventh year of King Artaxerxes.

Some of the Israelites came up to Jerusalem too. They included priests, Levites and musicians. They also included the temple servants and those who guarded the temple gates. It was in the seventh year that Artaxerxes was king.

And there went up also to Jerusalem, in the seventh year of Artaxerxes the king, some of the people of Israel, and some of the priests and Levites, the singers and gatekeepers, and the temple servants.

Some of the people of Israel, as well as some of the priests, Levites, singers, gatekeepers, and Temple servants, traveled up to Jerusalem with him in the seventh year of King Artaxerxes’ reign.

Some of the Israelites, priests, Levites, singers, gatekeepers, and temple servants accompanied him to Jerusalem in the seventh year of King Artaxerxes.

Some of the sons of Israel and some of the priests, the Levites, the singers, the gatekeepers, and the temple servants went up to Jerusalem in the seventh year of King Artaxerxes.

Some of the children of Israel, the priests, the Levites, the singers, the gatekeepers, and the Nethinim came up to Jerusalem in the seventh year of King Artaxerxes.

And there went up some of the children of Israel, and of the priests, and the Levites, and the singers, and the porters, and the Nethinim, unto Jerusalem, in the seventh year of Artaxerxes the king.

Some of the Israelites, priests, Levites, singers, gatekeepers, and temple servants accompanied him to Jerusalem in the seventh year of King Artaxerxes.

And there went up[ some] of the children of Israel, and of the priests, and the Levites, and the singers, and the porters, and the Nethinims, unto Jerusalem, in the seventh year of Artaxerxes the king.

Some of the children of Israel, including some of the priests, the Levites, the singers, the gatekeepers, and the temple servants went up to Jerusalem in the seventh year of Artaxerxes the king.

These are the leaders and those enrolled with them by genealogy who were coming up with me from Babylon during the reign of King Artaxerxes:from the descendants of Phinehas, Gershom; from the descendants of Ithamar, Daniel; from the descendants of David, Hattushthe son of Shecaniah; from the descendants of Parosh, Zechariah, and with him were enrolled by genealogy 150 men;from the descendants of Pahath-Moab, Eliehoenai son of Zerahiah, and with him 200 men;from the descendants of Zattu, Shecaniah son of Jahaziel, and with him 300 men;from the descendants of Adin, Ebed son of Jonathan, and with him 50 men;from the descendants of Elam, Jeshaiah son of Athaliah, and with him 70 men;from the descendants of Shephatiah, Zebadiah son of Michael, and with him 80 men;from the descendants of Joab, Obadiah son of Jehiel, and with him 218 men;from the descendants of Bani, Shelomith son of Josiphiah, and with him 160 men;from the descendants of Bebai, Zechariah son of Bebai, and with him 28 men;from the descendants of Azgad, Johanan son of Hakkatan, and with him 110 men;from the descendants of Adonikam there were the latter ones. Their names were Eliphelet, Jeuel, and Shemaiah, and with them 60 men;from the descendants of Bigvai, Uthai, and Zaccur, and with them 70 men.I had them assemble at the canal that flows toward Ahava, and we camped there for three days. I observed that the people and the priests were present, but I found no Levites there.So I sent for Eliezer, Ariel, Shemaiah, Elnathan, Jarib, Elnathan, Nathan, Zechariah, and Meshullam, who were leaders, and Joiarib and Elnathan, who were teachers.I sent them to Iddo, who was the leader in the place called Casiphia. I told them what to say to Iddo and his relatives, who were the temple servants in Casiphia, so they would bring us attendants for the temple of our God.Due to the fact that the good hand of our God was on us, they brought us a skilled man, from the descendants of Mahli the son of Levi son of Israel. This man was Sherebiah, who was accompanied by his sons and brothers, 18 men,and Hashabiah, along with Jeshaiah from the descendants of Merari, with his brothers and their sons, 20 men,and some of the temple servants that David and his officials had established for the work of the Levites– 220 of them. They were all designated by name.

Then in the month of Nisan, in the twentieth year of King Artaxerxes, when wine was brought to me, I took the wine and gave it to the king. Previously I had not been depressed in the king’s presence.

The Levites: the descendants of Jeshua and Kadmiel( through the line of Hodaviah): 74.The singers: the descendants of Asaph: 128.The gatekeepers: the descendants of Shallum, the descendants of Ater, the descendants of Talmon, the descendants of Akkub, the descendants of Hatita, and the descendants of Shobai: 139.The temple servants: the descendants of Ziha, the descendants of Hasupha, the descendants of Tabbaoth,the descendants of Keros, the descendants of Siaha, the descendants of Padon,the descendants of Lebanah, the descendants of Hagabah, the descendants of Akkub,the descendants of Hagab, the descendants of Shalmai, the descendants of Hanan,the descendants of Giddel, the descendants of Gahar, the descendants of Reaiah,the descendants of Rezin, the descendants of Nekoda, the descendants of Gazzam,the descendants of Uzzah, the descendants of Paseah, the descendants of Besai,the descendants of Asnah, the descendants of Meunim, the descendants of Nephussim,the descendants of Bakbuk, the descendants of Hakupha, the descendants of Harhur,the descendants of Bazluth, the descendants of Mehida, the descendants of Harsha,the descendants of Barkos, the descendants of Sisera, the descendants of Temah,the descendants of Neziah, and the descendants of Hatipha.The descendants of the servants of Solomon: the descendants of Sotai, the descendants of Hassophereth, the descendants of Peruda,the descendants of Jaala, the descendants of Darkon, the descendants of Giddel,the descendants of Shephatiah, the descendants of Hattil, the descendants of Pokereth-Hazzebaim, and the descendants of Ami.All the temple servants and the descendants of the servants of Solomon: 392.These are the ones that came up from Tel Melah, Tel Harsha, Kerub, Addon, and Immer( although they were unable to certify their family connection or their ancestry, as to whether they really were from Israel):the descendants of Delaiah, the descendants of Tobiah, and the descendants of Nekoda: 652.And from among the priests: the descendants of Hobaiah, the descendants of Hakkoz, and the descendants of Barzillai( who had taken a wife from the daughters of Barzillai the Gileadite and was called by that name).They searched for their records in the genealogical materials, but did not find them. They were therefore excluded from the priesthood.The governor instructed them not to eat any of the sacred food until there was a priest who could consult the Urim and Thummim.The entire group numbered 42,360,not counting their male and female servants, who numbered 7,337. They also had 200 male and female singersand 736 horses, 245 mules,435 camels, and 6,720 donkeys.When they came to the LORD’s temple in Jerusalem, some of the family leaders offered voluntary offerings for the temple of God in order to rebuild it on its site.As they were able, they gave to the treasury for this work 61,000 drachmas of gold, 5,000 minas of silver, and 100 priestly robes.The priests, the Levites, some of the people, the singers, the gatekeepers, and the temple servants lived in their towns, and all the rest of Israel lived in their towns.

“ Now the rest of the people– the priests, the Levites, the gatekeepers, the singers, the temple attendants, and all those who have separated themselves from the neighboring peoples because of the law of God, along with their wives, their sons, and their daughters, all of whom are able to understand–

David and the army officers selected some of the sons of Asaph, Heman, and Jeduthun to prophesy as they played stringed instruments and cymbals. The following men were assigned this responsibility:From the sons of Asaph: Zaccur, Joseph, Nethaniah, and Asarelah. The sons of Asaph were supervised by Asaph, who prophesied under the king’s supervision.From the sons of Jeduthun: Gedaliah, Zeri, Jeshaiah, Hashabiah, and Mattithiah– six in all, under supervision of their father Jeduthun, who prophesied as he played a harp, giving thanks and praise to the LORD.From the sons of Heman: Bukkiah, Mattaniah, Uzziel, Shebuel, Jerimoth, Hananiah, Hanani, Eliathah, Giddalti, Romamti-Ezer, Joshbekashah, Mallothi, Hothir, and Mahazioth.All these were the sons of Heman, the king’s prophet. God had promised him these sons in order to make him prestigious. God gave Heman fourteen sons and three daughters.All of these were under the supervision of their fathers; they were musicians in the LORD’s temple, playing cymbals and stringed instruments as they served in God’s temple. Asaph, Jeduthun, and Heman were under the supervision of the king.They and their relatives, all of them skilled and trained to make music to the LORD, numbered two hundred eighty-eight.They cast lots to determine their responsibilities– oldest as well as youngest, teacher as well as student.

Furthermore, be aware of the fact that you have no authority to impose tax, tribute, or toll on any of the priests, the Levites, the musicians, the doorkeepers, the temple servants, or the attendants at the temple of this God.

These are the men David put in charge of music in the LORD’s sanctuary, after the ark was placed there.They performed music before the sanctuary of the meeting tent until Solomon built the LORD’s temple in Jerusalem. They carried out their tasks according to regulations.These are the ones who served along with their sons: From the Kohathites: Heman the musician, son of Joel, son of Samuel,son of Elkanah, son of Jeroham, son of Eliel, son of Toah,son of Zuph, son of Elkanah, son of Mahath, son of Amasai,son of Elkanah, son of Joel, son of Azariah, son of Zephaniah,son of Tahath, son of Assir, son of Ebiasaph, son of Korah,son of Izhar, son of Kohath, son of Levi, son of Israel.Serving beside him was his fellow Levite Asaph, son of Berechiah, son of Shimea,son of Michael, son of Baaseiah, son of Malkijah,son of Ethni, son of Zerah, son of Adaiah,son of Ethan, son of Zimmah, son of Shimei,son of Jahath, son of Gershom, son of Levi.Serving beside them were their fellow Levites, the descendants of Merari, led by Ethan, son of Kishi, son of Abdi, son of Malluch,son of Hashabiah, son of Amaziah, son of Hilkiah,son of Amzi, son of Bani, son of Shemer,son of Mahli, son of Mushi, son of Merari, son of Levi.The rest of their fellow Levites were assigned to perform the remaining tasks at God’s sanctuary.

What follows is a copy of the letter that King Artaxerxes gave to Ezra the priestly scribe. Ezra was a scribe in matters pertaining to the commandments of the LORD and his statutes over Israel:“ Artaxerxes, king of kings, to Ezra the priest, a scribe of the perfect law of the God of heaven:

The gatekeepers were: Shallum, Akkub, Talmon, Ahiman, and their brothers. Shallum was the leader;he serves to this day at the King’s Gate on the east. These were the gatekeepers from the camp of the descendants of Levi.Shallum son of Kore, son of Ebiasaph, son of Korah, and his relatives from his family( the Korahites) were assigned to guard the entrance to the sanctuary. Their ancestors had guarded the entrance to the LORD’s dwelling place.Phinehas son of Eleazar had been their leader in earlier times, and the LORD was with him.Zechariah son of Meshelemiah was the guard at the entrance to the meeting tent.All those selected to be gatekeepers at the entrances numbered 212. Their names were recorded in the genealogical records of their settlements. David and Samuel the prophet had appointed them to their positions.They and their descendants were assigned to guard the gates of the LORD’s sanctuary( that is, the tabernacle).The gatekeepers were posted on all four sides– east, west, north, and south.Their relatives, who lived in their settlements, came from time to time and served with them for seven-day periods.The four head gatekeepers, who were Levites, were assigned to guard the storerooms and treasuries in God’s sanctuary.They would spend the night in their posts all around God’s sanctuary, for they were assigned to guard it and would open it with the key every morning.

The elders of the Jews continued building and prospering, while at the same time Haggai the prophet and Zechariah the son of Iddo continued prophesying. They built and brought it to completion by the command of the God of Israel and by the command of Cyrus and Darius and Artaxerxes king of Persia.
