While Ezra was praying and confessing, weeping and throwing himself down before the house of God, a large crowd of Israelites— men, women and children— gathered around him. They too wept bitterly.

Then I acknowledged my sin to you and did not cover up my iniquity. I said,“ I will confess my transgressions to the Lord.” And you forgave the guilt of my sin. (niv)

Oh, that my head were a spring of water and my eyes a fountain of tears! I would weep day and night for the slain of my people. (niv)

“ And I will pour out on the house of David and the inhabitants of Jerusalem a spirit of grace and supplication. They will look on me, the one they have pierced, and they will mourn for him as one mourns for an only child, and grieve bitterly for him as one grieves for a firstborn son. (niv)

If you do not listen, I will weep in secret because of your pride; my eyes will weep bitterly, overflowing with tears, because the Lord’s flock will be taken captive. (niv)

The Lord said to him:“ I have heard the prayer and plea you have made before me; I have consecrated this temple, which you have built, by putting my Name there forever. My eyes and my heart will always be there. (niv)

Gather the people, consecrate the assembly; bring together the elders, gather the children, those nursing at the breast. Let the bridegroom leave his room and the bride her chamber.Let the priests, who minister before the Lord, weep between the portico and the altar. Let them say,“ Spare your people, Lord. Do not make your inheritance an object of scorn, a byword among the nations. Why should they say among the peoples,‘ Where is their God?’”Then the Lord was jealous for his land and took pity on his people. (niv)

Assemble the people— men, women and children, and the foreigners residing in your towns— so they can listen and learn to fear the Lord your God and follow carefully all the words of this law. (niv)

Take words with you and return to the Lord. Say to him:“ Forgive all our sins and receive us graciously, that we may offer the fruit of our lips. (niv)

All the men of Judah, with their wives and children and little ones, stood there before the Lord. (niv)
