Neither their silver nor their gold Shall be able to deliver them In the day of the LORD’s wrath; But the whole land shall be devoured By the fire of His jealousy, For He will make speedy riddance Of all those who dwell in the land.

Riches do not profit in the day of wrath, But righteousness delivers from death.

“ Son of man, these men have set up their idols in their hearts, and put before them that which causes them to stumble into iniquity. Should I let Myself be inquired of at all by them?“ Therefore speak to them, and say to them,‘ Thus says the Lord God:“ Everyone of the house of Israel who sets up his idols in his heart, and puts before him what causes him to stumble into iniquity, and then comes to the prophet, I the Lord will answer him who comes, according to the multitude of his idols,

For anyone of the house of Israel, or of the strangers who dwell in Israel, who separates himself from Me and sets up his idols in his heart and puts before him what causes him to stumble into iniquity, then comes to a prophet to inquire of him concerning Me, I the Lord will answer him by Myself.

Because they ministered to them before their idols and caused the house of Israel to fall into iniquity, therefore I have raised My hand in an oath against them,” says the Lord GOD,“ that they shall bear their iniquity.

“ Though evil is sweet in his mouth, And he hides it under his tongue,Though he spares it and does not forsake it, But still keeps it in his mouth,Yet his food in his stomach turns sour; It becomes cobra venom within him.He swallows down riches And vomits them up again; God casts them out of his belly.He will suck the poison of cobras; The viper’s tongue will slay him.He will not see the streams, The rivers flowing with honey and cream.He will restore that for which he labored, And will not swallow it down; From the proceeds of business He will get no enjoyment.For he has oppressed and forsaken the poor, He has violently seized a house which he did not build.“ Because he knows no quietness in his heart, He will not save anything he desires.Nothing is left for him to eat; Therefore his well-being will not last.In his self-sufficiency he will be in distress; Every hand of misery will come against him.When he is about to fill his stomach, God will cast on him the fury of His wrath, And will rain it on him while he is eating.

And I will say to my soul,“ Soul, you have many goods laid up for many years; take your ease; eat, drink, and be merry.”’But God said to him,‘ Fool! This night your soul will be required of you; then whose will those things be which you have provided?’

You will also defile the covering of your images of silver, And the ornament of your molded images of gold. You will throw them away as an unclean thing; You will say to them,“ Get away!”

Why do you spend money for what is not bread, And your wages for what does not satisfy? Listen carefully to Me, and eat what is good, And let your soul delight itself in abundance.

In that day a man will cast away his idols of silver And his idols of gold, Which they made, each for himself to worship, To the moles and bats,

For what profit is it to a man if he gains the whole world, and loses his own soul? Or what will a man give in exchange for his soul?

He who loves silver will not be satisfied with silver; Nor he who loves abundance, with increase. This also is vanity.

They were not deprived of their craving; But while their food was still in their mouths,The wrath of God came against them, And slew the stoutest of them, And struck down the choice men of Israel.

And David says:“ Let their table become a snare and a trap, A stumbling block and a recompense to them.

Therefore they arose and fled at twilight, and left the camp intact— their tents, their horses, and their donkeys— and they fled for their lives.And when these lepers came to the outskirts of the camp, they went into one tent and ate and drank, and carried from it silver and gold and clothing, and went and hid them; then they came back and entered another tent, and carried some from there also, and went and hid it.

And they went after them to the Jordan; and indeed all the road was full of garments and weapons which the Syrians had thrown away in their haste. So the messengers returned and told the king.
