“‘ During the seven days of the festival, which begins in the seventh month on the fifteenth day, he is to make the same provision for sin offerings, burnt offerings, grain offerings and oil.

耶和華對摩西說：“你要告訴以色列人：七月十五日是住棚節，要在耶和華面前守這七天的節期。第一天應當有聖會；甚麼勞碌的工你們都不可作。這七天你們每天都要獻火祭給耶和華；第八天應當有聖會，要獻火祭給耶和華，這是集會的日子，甚麼勞碌的工都不可作。“以上是耶和華的節日，你們應當召集聖會，照著每日的規定獻火祭給耶和華，就是燔祭、素祭、平安祭和奠祭。此外，還有耶和華的安息日，你們的供物，你們的一切還願祭和甘心獻的祭，這些是你們當獻給耶和華的。“又在七月十五日，你們收了那地的出產以後，要守耶和華的節七日，第一天要完全休歇，第八天也要完全休歇。第一天你們要拿果樹的美果、棕樹枝、茂密的大樹枝和溪邊的楊柳枝，在耶和華你們的神面前歡樂七天。你們每年七月，要守耶和華這七天的節期，這是你們世世代代永遠的律例。你們要住在棚裡七天；以色列所有的本地人都要住在棚裡，好叫你們世世代代知道，我領以色列人出埃及地的時候，曾經使他們住在棚裡；我是耶和華你們的神。”

於是，以色列眾人在七月的節期來到時，都聚集到王那裡。

“你從禾場上和榨酒池裡收藏了出產以後，就要舉行住棚節七日。在這節期以內，你和你的兒女、僕婢，以及住在你城裡的利未人、寄居者、孤兒和寡婦，都要歡樂。你要在耶和華選擇的地方，向耶和華你的神守節七日，因為耶和華你的神，要在你一切土產上，和你手所作的一切事上，賜福給你，你就滿有歡樂。

所有前來攻擊耶路撒冷的列國中剩下的人，必年年上來敬拜大君王萬軍之耶和華，並且守住棚節。地上的萬族中，凡是不上耶路撒冷敬拜大君王萬軍之耶和華的，就必沒有雨降給他們。埃及族若不上來參加，就必沒有雨降給他們，這就是耶和華用來擊打那些不上來守住棚節的列國的災禍。這就是埃及的刑罰，也是所有不上來守住棚節的列國的懲罰。

他們發現律法上記載，耶和華曾藉著摩西吩咐以色列人，要在七月的節期中，住在棚裡，並且要在自己的城裡和在耶路撒冷宣揚布告說：“你們要上到山上，把橄欖樹枝、油木樹枝、番石榴枝、棕樹枝和樹葉繁茂大樹的枝子帶回來，照著律法所寫的搭棚。”於是眾民出去，把樹枝帶回來，各人在自己的房頂上，在院子裡，神的院中，水門的廣場，或是在以法蓮門的廣場搭棚。從被擄歸回的全體會眾都搭了棚，並且住在棚裡；從嫩的兒子約書亞的時候，直到那日，以色列人都沒有這樣行過。大家都非常快樂。從頭一天直到最後一天，每天都宣讀神的律法書。他們守節七天，第八天照典章有嚴肅會。

節期的最後一天，就是最隆重的那一天，耶穌站著高聲說：“人若渴了，可以到我這裡來喝！信我的人，就像聖經所說的，從他的腹中要湧流出活水的江河來。”他這話是指著信他的人要接受聖靈說的；那時聖靈還沒有降臨，因為耶穌還沒有得著榮耀。

猶太人的住棚節快到了，

那時，所羅門和全體以色列人，就是來自哈馬口，直到埃及小河的一群極大的會眾，一起舉行了七天的節期。第八天舉行了嚴肅會，又舉行獻壇禮七天，舉行了七天的節期。七月二十三日，王遣散眾民回家；他們因看見耶和華向大衛、所羅門和他的子民以色列所施的恩惠，心裡都歡喜快樂。
