耶和华对摩西说：“你要告诉以色列人：七月十五日是住棚节，要在耶和华面前守这七天的节期。第一天应当有圣会；什么劳碌的工你们都不可作。这七天你们每天都要献火祭给耶和华；第八天应当有圣会，要献火祭给耶和华，这是集会的日子，什么劳碌的工都不可作。“以上是耶和华的节日，你们应当召集圣会，照着每日的规定献火祭给耶和华，就是燔祭、素祭、平安祭和奠祭。此外，还有耶和华的安息日，你们的供物，你们的一切还愿祭和甘心献的祭，这些是你们当献给耶和华的。“又在七月十五日，你们收了那地的出产以后，要守耶和华的节七日，第一天要完全休歇，第八天也要完全休歇。第一天你们要拿果树的美果、棕树枝、茂密的大树枝和溪边的杨柳枝，在耶和华你们的神面前欢乐七天。你们每年七月，要守耶和华这七天的节期，这是你们世世代代永远的律例。你们要住在棚里七天；以色列所有的本地人都要住在棚里，好叫你们世世代代知道，我领以色列人出埃及地的时候，曾经使他们住在棚里；我是耶和华你们的神。”

于是，以色列众人在七月的节期来到时，都聚集到王那里。

“你从禾场上和榨酒池里收藏了出产以后，就要举行住棚节七日。在这节期以内，你和你的儿女、仆婢，以及住在你城里的利未人、寄居者、孤儿和寡妇，都要欢乐。你要在耶和华选择的地方，向耶和华你的神守节七日，因为耶和华你的神，要在你一切土产上，和你手所作的一切事上，赐福给你，你就满有欢乐。

所有前来攻击耶路撒冷的列国中剩下的人，必年年上来敬拜大君王万军之耶和华，并且守住棚节。地上的万族中，凡是不上耶路撒冷敬拜大君王万军之耶和华的，就必没有雨降给他们。埃及族若不上来参加，就必没有雨降给他们，这就是耶和华用来击打那些不上来守住棚节的列国的灾祸。这就是埃及的刑罚，也是所有不上来守住棚节的列国的惩罚。

他们发现律法上记载，耶和华曾藉着摩西吩咐以色列人，要在七月的节期中，住在棚里，并且要在自己的城里和在耶路撒冷宣扬布告说：“你们要上到山上，把橄榄树枝、油木树枝、番石榴枝、棕树枝和树叶繁茂大树的枝子带回来，照着律法所写的搭棚。”于是众民出去，把树枝带回来，各人在自己的房顶上，在院子里，神的院中，水门的广场，或是在以法莲门的广场搭棚。从被掳归回的全体会众都搭了棚，并且住在棚里；从嫩的儿子约书亚的时候，直到那日，以色列人都没有这样行过。大家都非常快乐。从头一天直到最后一天，每天都宣读神的律法书。他们守节七天，第八天照典章有严肃会。

节期的最后一天，就是最隆重的那一天，耶稣站着高声说：“人若渴了，可以到我这里来喝！信我的人，就像圣经所说的，从他的腹中要涌流出活水的江河来。”他这话是指着信他的人要接受圣灵说的；那时圣灵还没有降临，因为耶稣还没有得着荣耀。

犹太人的住棚节快到了，

那时，所罗门和全体以色列人，就是来自哈马口，直到埃及小河的一群极大的会众，一起举行了七天的节期。第八天举行了严肃会，又举行献坛礼七天，举行了七天的节期。七月二十三日，王遣散众民回家；他们因看见耶和华向大卫、所罗门和他的子民以色列所施的恩惠，心里都欢喜快乐。
