耶和华对摩西说：“你把以下条例告诉以色列人。“从七月十五日开始，你们要一连七天向耶和华守住棚节。第一天，你们要举行圣会，不可做日常工作。这七天你们要献火祭给耶和华。第八天要举行圣会，献火祭给耶和华。这是庄严的聚会，你们不可做日常工作。“以上是耶和华所定的节期。在这些节期里，你们要召开圣会，按规定的日子献给耶和华燔祭、素祭、奠祭和其他祭物。除了守安息日并向耶和华献供物、还愿祭和自愿献的祭以外，你们还要守这些节期。“你们收割完后，从七月十五日起，要一连七天庆祝耶和华的节期，第一天和第八天是安息之日。第一天，你们要摘下树上结的上好果子，折下棕树枝、叶子浓密的树枝与河边的柳枝，在你们的上帝耶和华面前欢庆七天。在每年七月的这七天，你们要向耶和华守这节期。这是永远不变的律例，你们世世代代都要遵守。你们要搭棚居住七天，所有以色列人都要住在棚里。这样，你们的后代就会知道，我带领以色列人离开埃及后，曾让他们住在棚里。我是你们的上帝耶和华。”

在七月住棚节的时候，以色列人都聚集到所罗门王那里。

“在收藏好谷物和新酒后，你们要守七天的住棚节。住棚节期间，你们要和儿女、仆婢、同城的利未人、寄居者及孤儿寡妇一起欢庆。要在你们的上帝耶和华选定的地方，为祂守住棚节七天；要满心欢喜，因为你们的上帝耶和华赐福你们，使你们的出产丰富、凡事顺利。

前来攻打耶路撒冷的列国中的幸存者，必每年上来敬拜大君王——万军之耶和华，并且守住棚节。地上万族中若有人不上耶路撒冷敬拜大君王——万军之耶和华，他们必没有雨水。埃及人若不上来敬拜，也必没有雨水，耶和华必使他们和不上来守住棚节的列国一样遭受瘟疫。这将是埃及和不上来守住棚节的列国所得的惩罚。

当时，他们发现耶和华借摩西吩咐的律法上记载，以色列人要在七月节期期间住在棚子里，并且要在他们的各城邑和耶路撒冷宣布：“你们要上山取橄榄树、野橄榄树、番石榴树、棕榈树和其他茂密树木的枝子，照着所规定的搭棚。”于是，民众都出去取来树枝，在自家的屋顶上、庭院里、上帝殿的院子里、水门的广场上和以法莲门的广场上搭棚。从流亡之地归回的民众都搭起棚子，住在里面。从嫩的儿子约书亚时代直到那天，以色列人从没有这样做过。民众非常欢喜。从第一天到最后一天，以斯拉每天都诵读上帝的律法书。他们守节期七天，第八天根据典章举行庄严的聚会。

节期最后一天，也是整个节期的高潮，耶稣站起来高声说：“人若渴了，可以到我这里来喝。正如圣经所言，信我的人，‘从他里面要流出活水的江河来’。”耶稣这话是指信祂的人要得到圣灵，但当时圣灵还没有降临，因为耶稣还没有得到荣耀。

犹太人的住棚节快到了，

所罗门和从哈马口直至埃及小河而来的全体以色列人聚成一大群会众，一起守节期七天。第八天举行庄严的聚会，又举行七天献坛礼。之后，他们又欢庆七天。七月二十三日，所罗门王让民众各回本乡。他们看见耶和华向大卫、所罗门和祂的以色列子民所施的恩惠，就满心欢喜地回家去了。
