“ Now you, son of man, take for yourself one stick and write on it,‘ For Judah and for the sons of Israel, his companions’; then take another stick and write on it,‘ For Joseph, the stick of Ephraim and all the house of Israel, his companions.’

“ Son of man, take a stick of wood and write on it,‘ Belonging to Judah and the Israelites associated with him.’ Then take another stick of wood, and write on it,‘ Belonging to Joseph( that is, to Ephraim) and all the Israelites associated with him.’

“ Son of man, get a stick of wood. Write on it,‘ Belonging to the tribe of Judah and the Israelites who are connected with it.’ Then get another stick. Write on it,‘ Ephraim’s stick. Belonging to the tribes of Joseph and all the Israelites connected with them.’

“ Son of man, take a stick and write on it,‘ For Judah, and the people of Israel associated with him’; then take another stick and write on it,‘ For Joseph( the stick of Ephraim) and all the house of Israel associated with him.’

“ Son of man, take a piece of wood and carve on it these words:‘ This represents Judah and its allied tribes.’ Then take another piece and carve these words on it:‘ This represents Ephraim and the northern tribes of Israel.’

“ Son of man, take a single stick and write on it: Belonging to Judah and the Israelites associated with him. Then take another stick and write on it: Belonging to Joseph— the stick of Ephraim— and all the house of Israel associated with him.

“ As for you, son of man, take a stick for yourself and write on it:‘ For Judah and for the children of Israel, his companions.’ Then take another stick and write on it,‘ For Joseph, the stick of Ephraim, and for all the house of Israel, his companions.’

“ As for you, son of man, take one branch, and write on it,‘ For Judah, and for the Israelites associated with him.’ Then take another branch and write on it,‘ For Joseph, the branch of Ephraim and all the house of Israel associated with him.’

“ You, son of man, take one stick, and write on it,‘ For Judah, and for the children of Israel his companions.’ Then take another stick, and write on it,‘ For Joseph, the stick of Ephraim, and for all the house of Israel his companions.’

And he gathered all Judah and Benjamin, and those from Ephraim, Manasseh, and Simeon who resided with them, for many defected to him from Israel when they saw that the Lord his God was with him.

But as for the sons of Israel who lived in the cities of Judah, Rehoboam reigned over them.

So Israel has been in rebellion against the house of David to this day.

“ Speak to the sons of Israel, and obtain from them a staff for each father’s household: twelve staffs, from all their leaders for their fathers’ households. You shall write each man’s name on his staff,and write Aaron’s name on the staff of Levi; for there is to be one staff for the head of each of their fathers’ households.

When all Israel saw that the king had not listened to them, the people replied to the king, saying,“ What share do we have in David? We have no inheritance in the son of Jesse; To your tents, Israel! Now look after your own house, David!” So Israel went away to their tents.But as for the sons of Israel who lived in the cities of Judah, Rehoboam reigned over them.Then King Rehoboam sent Adoram, who was in charge of the forced labor, and all Israel stoned him to death. And King Rehoboam hurried to mount his chariot to flee to Jerusalem.So Israel has broken with the house of David to this day.And it came about, when all Israel heard that Jeroboam had returned, that they sent word and called him to the assembly, and made him king over all Israel. None except the tribe of Judah alone followed the house of David.

He also strengthened the fortresses and put officers in them and supplies of food, oil, and wine.He put shields and spears in every city and strengthened them greatly. So he held Judah and Benjamin.Moreover, the priests and the Levites who were in all Israel also stood with him from all their districts.For the Levites left their pasture lands and their property and went to Judah and Jerusalem, because Jeroboam and his sons had excluded them from serving as priests to the Lord.He set up priests of his own for the high places, for the satyrs and the calves which he had made.Those from all the tribes of Israel who set their hearts on seeking the Lord God of Israel followed them to Jerusalem, to sacrifice to the Lord God of their fathers.They strengthened the kingdom of Judah and supported Rehoboam the son of Solomon for three years, for they walked in the way of David and Solomon for three years.

Nevertheless, some men of Asher, Manasseh, and Zebulun humbled themselves and came to Jerusalem.The hand of God was also on Judah to give them one heart to do what the king and the princes commanded by the word of the Lord.Now many people were gathered at Jerusalem to celebrate the Feast of Unleavened Bread in the second month, a very large assembly.They got up and removed the altars which were in Jerusalem; they also removed all the incense altars and threw them into the brook Kidron.Then they slaughtered the Passover lambs on the fourteenth of the second month. And the priests and Levites were ashamed of themselves, and consecrated themselves and brought burnt offerings to the house of the Lord.They stood at their stations following their custom, according to the Law of Moses the man of God; the priests sprinkled the blood which they received from the hand of the Levites.For there were many in the assembly who had not consecrated themselves; therefore, the Levites were in charge of the slaughter of the Passover lambs for everyone who was unclean, in order to consecrate them to the Lord.For a multitude of the people, many from Ephraim and Manasseh, and Issachar and Zebulun, had not purified themselves, yet they ate the Passover contrary to what was written. For Hezekiah prayed for them, saying,“ May the good Lord pardon
