My people come to you, as they usually do, and sit before you to hear your words, but they do not put them into practice. Their mouths speak of love, but their hearts are greedy for unjust gain.

My people come to you, just as they usually do. They sit in front of you. They hear what you say. But they do not put it into practice. With their mouths they say they love me. But in their hearts they want what belongs to others. They try to get rich by cheating them.

So my people come pretending to be sincere and sit before you. They listen to your words, but they have no intention of doing what you say. Their mouths are full of lustful words, and their hearts seek only after money.

So my people come to you in crowds, sit in front of you, and hear your words, but they don’t obey them. Their mouths go on passionately, but their hearts pursue dishonest profit.

And they come to you as people come, and sit before you as My people and hear your words, but they do not do them; for they do the lustful desires expressed by their mouth, and their heart follows their unlawful gain.

So they come to you as people do, they sit before you as My people, and they hear your words, but they do not do them; for with their mouth they show much love, but their hearts pursue their own gain.

As for what was sown among thorns, this is the one who hears the word, but the cares of the world and the deceitfulness of riches choke the word, and it proves unfruitful.

But they flattered him with their mouths; they lied to him with their tongues.Their heart was not steadfast toward him; they were not faithful to his covenant.

And the Lord said:“ Because this people draw near with their mouth and honor me with their lips, while their hearts are far from me, and their fear of me is a commandment taught by men,

But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves.For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man who looks intently at his natural face in a mirror.For he looks at himself and goes away and at once forgets what he was like.

What good is it, my brothers, if someone says he has faith but does not have works? Can that faith save him?If a brother or sister is poorly clothed and lacking in daily food,and one of you says to them,“ Go in peace, be warmed and filled,” without giving them the things needed for the body, what good is that?

But he said,“ Blessed rather are those who hear the word of God and keep it!”

he is like a man building a house, who dug deep and laid the foundation on the rock. And when a flood arose, the stream broke against that house and could not shake it, because it had been well built.But the one who hears and does not do them is like a man who built a house on the ground without a foundation. When the stream broke against it, immediately it fell, and the ruin of that house was great.”

In the sixth year, in the sixth month, on the fifth day of the month, as I sat in my house, with the elders of Judah sitting before me, the hand of the Lord God fell upon me there.

And the word of the Lord will be to them precept upon precept, precept upon precept, line upon line, line upon line, here a little, there a little, that they may go, and fall backward, and be broken, and snared, and taken.

But if anyone has the world’s goods and sees his brother in need, yet closes his heart against him, how does God’s love abide in him?Little children, let us not love in word or talk but in deed and in truth.

But those who desire to be rich fall into temptation, into a snare, into many senseless and harmful desires that plunge people into ruin and destruction.For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evils. It is through this craving that some have wandered away from the faith and pierced themselves with many pangs.

“ And the Lord heard your words, when you spoke to me. And the Lord said to me,‘ I have heard the words of this people, which they have spoken to you. They are right in all that they have spoken.Oh that they had such a heart as this always, to fear me and to keep all my commandments, that it might go well with them and with their descendants forever!

When the young man heard this he went away sorrowful, for he had great possessions.

Then certain of the elders of Israel came to me and sat before me.

In the seventh year, in the fifth month, on the tenth day of the month, certain of the elders of Israel came to inquire of the Lord, and sat before me.And the word of the Lord came to me:“ Son of man, speak to the elders of Israel, and say to them, Thus says the Lord God, Is it to inquire of me that you come? As I live, declares the Lord God, I will not be inquired of by you.Will you judge them, son of man, will you judge them? Let them know the abominations of their fathers,and say to them, Thus says the Lord God: On the day when I chose Israel, I swore to the offspring of the house of Jacob, making myself known to them in the land of Egypt; I swore to them, saying, I am the Lord your God.On that day I swore to them that I would bring them out of the land of Egypt into a land that I had searched out for them, a land flowing with milk and honey, the most glorious of all lands.And I said to them,‘ Cast away the detestable things your eyes feast on, every one of you, and do not defile yourselves with the idols of Egypt; I am the Lord your God.’But they rebelled against me and were not willing to listen to me. None of them cast away the detestable things their eyes feasted on, nor did they forsake the idols of Egypt.“ Then I said I would pour out my wrath upon them and spend my anger against them in the midst of the land of Egypt.But I acted for the sake of my name, that it should not be profaned in the sight of the nations among whom they lived, in whose sight I made myself known to them in bringing them out of the land of Egypt.So I led them out of the land of Egypt and brought them into the wilderness.I gave them my statutes and made known to them my rules, by which, if a person does them, he shall live.Moreover, I gave them my Sabbaths, as a sign between me and them, that they might know that I am the Lord who sanctifies them.But the house of Israel rebelled against me in the wilderness. They did not walk in my statutes but rejected my rules, by which, if a person does them, he shall live; and my Sabbaths they greatly profaned.“ Then I said I would pour out my wrath upon them in the wilderness, to make a full end of them.But I acted for the sake of my name, that it should not be profaned in the sight of the nations, in whose sight I had brought them out.Moreover, I swore to them in the wilderness that I would not bring them into the land that I had given them, a land flowing with milk and honey, the most glorious of all lands,because they rejected my rules and did not walk in my statutes, and profaned my Sabbaths; for their heart went after their idols.Nevertheless, my eye spared them, and I did not destroy them or make a full end of them in the wilderness.“ And I said to their children in the wilderness,‘ Do not walk in the statutes of your fathers, nor keep their rules, nor defile yourselves with their idols.I am the Lord your God; walk in my statutes, and be careful to obey my rules,and keep my Sabbaths holy that they may be a sign between me and you, that you may know that I am the Lord your God.’But the children rebelled against me. They did not walk in my statutes and were not careful to obey my rules, by which, if a person does them, he shall live; they profaned my Sabbaths.“ Then I said I would pour out my wrath upon them and spend my anger against them in the wilderness.But I withheld my hand and acted for the sake of my name, that it should not be profaned in the sight of the nations, in whose sight I had brought them out.Moreover, I swore to them in the wilderness that I would scatter them among the nations and disperse them through the countries,because they had not obeyed my rules, but had rejected my statutes and profaned my Sabbaths, and their eyes were set on their fathers’ idols.Moreover, I gave them statutes that were not good and rules by which they could not have life,and I defiled them through their very gifts in their offering up all their firstborn, that I might devastate them. I did it that they might know that I am the Lord.“ Therefore, son of man, speak to the house of Israel and say to them, Thus says the Lord God: In this also your fathers blasphemed me, by dealing treacherously with me.For when I had brought them into the land that I swore to give them, then wherever they saw any high hill or any leafy tree, there they offered their sacrifices and there they presented the provocation of their offering; there they sent up their pleasing aromas, and there they poured out their drink offerings.( I said to them,‘ What is the high place to which you go?’ So its name is called Bamah to this day.)“ Therefore say to the house of Israel, Thus says the Lord God: Will you defile yourselves after the manner of your fathers and go whoring after their detestable things?When you present your gifts and offer up your children in fire, you defile yourselves with all your idols to this day. And shall I be inquired of by you, O house of Israel? As I live, declares the Lord God, I will not be inquired of by you.“ What is in your mind shall never happen— the thought,‘ Let us be like the nations, like the tribes of the countries, and worship wood and stone.’

“ No one can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and money.

And he said to them,“ Take care, and be on your guard against all covetousness, for one’s life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions.”And he told them a parable, saying,“ The land of a rich man produced plentifully,and he thought to himself,‘ What shall I do, for I have nowhere to store my crops?’And he said,‘ I will do this: I will tear down my barns and build larger ones, and there I will store all my grain and my goods.And I will say to my soul,“ Soul, you have ample goods laid up for many years; relax, eat, drink, be merry.”’But God said to him,‘ Fool! This night your soul is required of you, and the things you have prepared, whose will they be?’So is the one who lays up treasure for himself and is not rich toward God.”

But he answered them,“ My mother and my brothers are those who hear the word of God and do it.”

When Jeremiah finished speaking to all the people all these words of the Lord their God, with which the Lord their God had sent him to them,Azariah the son of Hoshaiah and Johanan the son of Kareah and all the insolent men said to Jeremiah,“ You are telling a lie. The Lord our God did not send you to say,‘ Do not go to Egypt to live there,’but Baruch the son of Neriah has set you against us, to deliver us into the hand of the Chaldeans, that they may kill us or take us into exile in Babylon.”So Johanan the son of Kareah and all the commanders of the forces and all the people did not obey the voice of the Lord, to remain in the land of Judah.But Johanan the son of Kareah and all the commanders of the forces took all the remnant of Judah who had returned to live in the land of Judah from all the nations to which they had been driven—the men, the women, the children, the princesses, and every person whom Nebuzaradan the captain of the guard had left with Gedaliah the son of Ahikam, son of Shaphan; also Jeremiah the prophet and Baruch the son of Neriah.And they came into the land of Egypt, for they did not obey the voice of the Lord. And they arrived at Tahpanhes.

And she had a sister called Mary, who sat at the Lord’s feet and listened to his teaching.

“ When one of this people, or a prophet or a priest asks you,‘ What is the burden of the Lord?’ you shall say to them,‘ You are the burden, and I will cast you off, declares the Lord.’And as for the prophet, priest, or one of the people who says,‘ The burden of the Lord,’ I will punish that man and his household.Thus shall you say, every one to his neighbor and every one to his brother,‘ What has the Lord answered?’ or‘ What has the Lord spoken?’But‘ the burden of the Lord’ you shall mention no more, for the burden is every man’s own word, and you pervert the words of the living God, the Lord of hosts, our God.Thus you shall say to the prophet,‘ What has the Lord answered you?’ or‘ What has the Lord spoken?’But if you say,‘ The burden of the Lord,’ thus says the Lord,‘ Because you have said these words,“ The burden of the Lord,” when I sent to you, saying,“ You shall not say,‘ The burden of the Lord,’”

Her princes in her midst are like wolves tearing the prey, shedding blood, destroying lives to get dishonest gain.

Thus says the Lord:“ Stand by the roads, and look, and ask for the ancient paths, where the good way is; and walk in it, and find rest for your souls. But they said,‘ We will not walk in it.’I set watchmen over you, saying,‘ Pay attention to the sound of the trumpet!’ But they said,‘ We will not pay attention.’

The Pharisees, who were lovers of money, heard all these things, and they ridiculed him.

“ Everyone then who hears these words of mine and does them will be like a wise man who built his house on the rock.And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house, but it did not fall, because it had been founded on the rock.And everyone who hears these words of mine and does not do them will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand.And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell, and great was the fall of it.”

So I sent for you at once, and you have been kind enough to come. Now therefore we are all here in the presence of God to hear all that you have been commanded by the Lord.”

“ As for the word that you have spoken to us in the name of the Lord, we will not listen to you.

For you may be sure of this, that everyone who is sexually immoral or impure, or who is covetous( that is, an idolater), has no inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and God.
