if they give back what they took in pledge for a loan, return what they have stolen, follow the decrees that give life, and do no evil— that person will surely live; they will not die.

They return things they take to make sure loans are repaid. They give back what they have stolen. They obey my rules that give life. They do not do what is evil. Then you can be sure they will live. They will not die.

For instance, they might give back a debtor’s security, return what they have stolen, and obey my life giving laws, no longer doing what is evil. If they do this, then they will surely live and not die.

Zacchaeus stood and said to the Lord,“ Behold, Lord, half of my goods I give to the poor. If I have wrongfully exacted anything of anyone, I restore four times as much.”

“ If a man steals an ox or a sheep, and kills it or sells it, he shall pay five oxen for an ox, and four sheep for a sheep.If the thief is found breaking in, and is struck so that he dies, there shall be no guilt of bloodshed for him.If the sun has risen on him, he is guilty of bloodshed. He shall make restitution. If he has nothing, then he shall be sold for his theft.If the stolen property is found in his hand alive, whether it is ox, donkey, or sheep, he shall pay double.

“ If anyone sins, and commits a trespass against Yahweh, and deals falsely with his neighbor in a matter of deposit, or of bargain, or of robbery, or has oppressed his neighbor,or has found that which was lost, and lied about it, and swearing to a lie— in any of these things that a man sins in his actions—then it shall be, if he has sinned, and is guilty, he shall restore that which he took by robbery, or the thing which he has gotten by oppression, or the deposit which was committed to him, or the lost thing which he found,or any thing about which he has sworn falsely: he shall restore it in full, and shall add a fifth part more to it. He shall return it to him to whom it belongs in the day of his being found guilty.

and has not wronged any, but has restored to the debtor his pledge, has taken nothing by robbery, has given his bread to the hungry, and has covered the naked with a garment;

You shall therefore keep my statutes and my ordinances, which if a man does, he shall live in them. I am Yahweh.

They were both righteous before God, walking blamelessly in all the commandments and ordinances of the Lord.

“‘“ But the house of Israel rebelled against me in the wilderness. They didn’t walk in my statutes, and they rejected my ordinances, which if a man keeps, he shall live in them. They greatly profaned my Sabbaths. Then I said I would pour out my wrath on them in the wilderness, to consume them.

You shall not deprive the foreigner or the fatherless of justice, nor take a widow’s clothing in pledge;

When you lend your neighbor any kind of loan, you shall not go into his house to get his pledge.You shall stand outside, and the man to whom you lend shall bring the pledge outside to you.If he is a poor man, you shall not sleep with his pledge.You shall surely restore to him the pledge when the sun goes down, that he may sleep in his garment and bless you. It shall be righteousness to you before Yahweh your God.

They drive away the donkey of the fatherless, and they take the widow’s ox for a pledge.

If you take your neighbor’s garment as collateral, you shall restore it to him before the sun goes down,for that is his only covering, it is his garment for his skin. What would he sleep in? It will happen, when he cries to me, that I will hear, for I am gracious.

There are those who pluck the fatherless from the breast, and take a pledge of the poor,

For you have taken pledges from your brother for nothing, and stripped the naked of their clothing.

“‘“ But the children rebelled against me. They didn’t walk in my statutes, and didn’t keep my ordinances to do them, which if a man does, he shall live in them. They profaned my Sabbaths. Then I said I would pour out my wrath on them, to accomplish my anger against them in the wilderness.

“ Behold, I come quickly. My reward is with me, to repay to each man according to his work.I am the Alpha and the Omega, the First and the Last, the Beginning and the End.Blessed are those who do his commandments, that they may have the right to the tree of life, and may enter in by the gates into the city.

I will never forget your precepts, for with them, you have revived me.

“ Speak to the children of Israel:‘ When a man or woman commits any sin that men commit, so as to trespass against Yahweh, and that soul is guilty,then he shall confess his sin which he has done; and he shall make restitution for his guilt in full, add to it the fifth part of it, and give it to him in respect of whom he has been guilty.But if the man has no kinsman to whom restitution may be made for the guilt, the restitution for guilt which is made to Yahweh shall be the priest’s, in addition to the ram of the atonement, by which atonement shall be made for him.

Again, when the wicked man turns away from his wickedness that he has committed, and does that which is lawful and right, he will save his soul alive.Because he considers, and turns away from all his transgressions that he has committed, he shall surely live. He shall not die.

and they lay themselves down beside every altar on clothes taken in pledge; and in the house of their God they drink the wine of those who have been fined.

has wronged the poor and needy, has taken by robbery, has not restored the pledge, and has lifted up his eyes to the idols, has committed abomination,

hasn’t wronged any, hasn’t taken anything to pledge, hasn’t taken by robbery, but has given his bread to the hungry, and has covered the naked with a garment;

No man shall take the mill or the upper millstone as a pledge, for he takes a life in pledge.
