They return things they take to make sure loans are repaid. They give back what they have stolen. They obey my rules that give life. They do not do what is evil. Then you can be sure they will live. They will not die.

For instance, they might give back a debtor’s security, return what they have stolen, and obey my life giving laws, no longer doing what is evil. If they do this, then they will surely live and not die.

“ If anyone sins and is unfaithful to the Lord by deceiving a neighbor about something entrusted to them or left in their care or about something stolen, or if they cheat their neighbor,or if they find lost property and lie about it, or if they swear falsely about any such sin that people may commit—when they sin in any of these ways and realize their guilt, they must return what they have stolen or taken by extortion, or what was entrusted to them, or the lost property they found,or whatever it was they swore falsely about. They must make restitution in full, add a fifth of the value to it and give it all to the owner on the day they present their guilt offering.

He does not oppress anyone, but returns what he took in pledge for a loan. He does not commit robbery but gives his food to the hungry and provides clothing for the naked.

Keep my decrees and laws, for the person who obeys them will live by them. I am the Lord.

Both of them were righteous in the sight of God, observing all the Lord’s commands and decrees blamelessly.

Then they will thank you, and it will be regarded as a righteous act in the sight of the Lord your God.

They drive away the orphan’s donkey and take the widow’s ox in pledge.

If you take your neighbor’s cloak as a pledge, return it by sunset,because that cloak is the only covering your neighbor has. What else can they sleep in? When they cry out to me, I will hear, for I am compassionate.

The fatherless child is snatched from the breast; the infant of the poor is seized for a debt.

You demanded security from your relatives for no reason; you stripped people of their clothing, leaving them naked.

“‘ But the children rebelled against me: They did not follow my decrees, they were not careful to keep my laws, of which I said,“ The person who obeys them will live by them,” and they desecrated my Sabbaths. So I said I would pour out my wrath on them and spend my anger against them in the wilderness.

“ Look, I am coming soon! My reward is with me, and I will give to each person according to what they have done.I am the Alpha and the Omega, the First and the Last, the Beginning and the End.“ Blessed are those who wash their robes, that they may have the right to the tree of life and may go through the gates into the city.

I will never forget your precepts, for by them you have preserved my life.

“ Say to the Israelites:‘ Any man or woman who wrongs another in any way and so is unfaithful to the Lord is guiltyand must confess the sin they have committed. They must make full restitution for the wrong they have done, add a fifth of the value to it and give it all to the person they have wronged.But if that person has no close relative to whom restitution can be made for the wrong, the restitution belongs to the Lord and must be given to the priest, along with the ram with which atonement is made for the wrongdoer.

But if a wicked person turns away from the wickedness they have committed and does what is just and right, they will save their life.Because they consider all the offenses they have committed and turn away from them, that person will surely live; they will not die.

They lie down beside every altar on garments taken in pledge. In the house of their god they drink wine taken as fines.

He oppresses the poor and needy. He commits robbery. He does not return what he took in pledge. He looks to the idols. He does detestable things.

He does not oppress anyone or require a pledge for a loan. He does not commit robbery but gives his food to the hungry and provides clothing for the naked.

Do not take a pair of millstones— not even the upper one— as security for a debt, because that would be taking a person’s livelihood as security.
