if they give back what they took in pledge for a loan, return what they have stolen, follow the decrees that give life, and do no evil— that person will surely live; they will not die.

They return things they take to make sure loans are repaid. They give back what they have stolen. They obey my rules that give life. They do not do what is evil. Then you can be sure they will live. They will not die.

For instance, they might give back a debtor’s security, return what they have stolen, and obey my life giving laws, no longer doing what is evil. If they do this, then they will surely live and not die.

“ If someone steals an ox or a sheep and slaughters it or sells it, he shall pay five oxen for the ox and four sheep for the sheep—If the thief is caught while breaking in and is struck so that he dies, there will be no guilt for bloodshed on his account.If the sun has risen on him, there will be guilt for bloodshed on his account— A thief shall certainly make restitution; if he owns nothing, then he shall be sold for his theft.If what he stole is actually found alive in his possession, whether an ox or a donkey or a sheep, he shall pay double.

“ When a person sins and acts unfaithfully against the Lord, and disavows the rightful claim of his neighbor regarding a deposit or a security entrusted to him, or regarding robbery, or he has extorted from his neighbor,or has found what was lost and lied about it and sworn falsely, so that he sins regarding any of the things that people do;then it shall be, when he sins and becomes guilty, that he shall restore what he took by robbery or acquired by extortion, or the deposit which was entrusted to him, or the lost property which he found,or anything about which he swore falsely; he shall make restitution for it in full and add to it a fifth more. He shall give it to the one to whom it belongs on the day he presents his guilt offering.

and if a man does not oppress anyone, but restores to the debtor his pledge, does not commit robbery, but gives his bread to the hungry and covers the naked with clothing,

So you shall keep My statutes and My judgments, which, if a person follows them, then he will live by them; I am the Lord.

They were both righteous in the sight of God, walking blamelessly in all the commandments and requirements of the Lord.

But the house of Israel rebelled against Me in the wilderness. They did not walk in My statutes and they rejected My ordinances, which, if a person follows them, then he will live by them; and they greatly profaned My Sabbaths. Then I resolved to pour out My wrath on them in the wilderness, to annihilate them.

“ You shall not pervert the justice due a stranger or an orphan, nor seize a widow’s garment as a pledge.

“ When you make your neighbor a loan of any kind, you shall not enter his house to take his pledge.You shall stand outside, and the person to whom you are making the loan shall bring the pledge outside to you.And if he is a poor man, you shall not sleep with his pledge.When the sun goes down you shall certainly return the pledge to him, so that he may sleep in his cloak and bless you; and it will be righteousness for you before the Lord your God.

They drive away the donkeys of orphans; They seize the widow’s ox as a pledge.

If you ever seize your neighbor’s cloak as a pledge, you are to return it to him before the sun sets,for that is his only covering; it is his cloak for his body. What else is he to sleep in? And it will come about that when he cries out to Me, I will listen to him, for I am gracious.

Others snatch an orphan from the breast, And they seize it as a pledge against the poor.

For you have seized pledges from your brothers without cause, And stripped people naked.

But the children rebelled against Me; they did not walk in My statutes, nor were they careful to follow My ordinances which, if a person follows them, then he will live by them; they profaned My Sabbaths. So I resolved to pour out My wrath on them, to use up My anger against them in the wilderness.

“ Behold, I am coming quickly, and My reward is with Me, to reward each one as his work deserves.I am the Alpha and the Omega, the first and the last, the beginning and the end.”Blessed are those who wash their robes, so that they will have the right to the tree of life, and may enter the city by the gates.

I will never forget Your precepts, For by them You have revived me.

“ Speak to the sons of Israel:‘ When a man or woman commits any of the sins of mankind, acting unfaithfully against the Lord, and that person is guilty,then he shall confess his sin which he has committed, and he shall make restitution in full for his wrong and add to it a fifth of it, and give it to him whom he has wronged.But if the person has no redeemer to whom restitution may be made for the wrong, the restitution which is made for the wrong must go to the Lord for the priest, besides the ram of atonement, by which atonement is made for him.

But when a wicked person turns away from his wickedness which he has committed and practices justice and righteousness, he will save his life.Since he understood and turned away from all his offenses which he had committed, he shall certainly live; he shall not die.

And on garments seized as pledges they stretch out beside every altar, And in the house of their God they drink the wine of those who have been fined.

oppresses the poor and needy, commits robbery, does not restore a pledge, but raises his eyes to the idols and commits abomination,

nor oppressed anyone, nor retained a pledge, nor committed robbery; instead, he gives his bread to the hungry and covers the naked with clothing,

“ No one shall seize a handmill or an upper millstone as a pledge for a loan, since he would be seizing the debtor’s means of life as a pledge.
