if they give back what they took in pledge for a loan, return what they have stolen, follow the decrees that give life, and do no evil— that person will surely live; they will not die.

They return things they take to make sure loans are repaid. They give back what they have stolen. They obey my rules that give life. They do not do what is evil. Then you can be sure they will live. They will not die.

For instance, they might give back a debtor’s security, return what they have stolen, and obey my life giving laws, no longer doing what is evil. If they do this, then they will surely live and not die.

“ If anyone sins and commits a breach of faith against the Lord by deceiving his neighbor in a matter of deposit or security, or through robbery, or if he has oppressed his neighboror has found something lost and lied about it, swearing falsely— in any of all the things that people do and sin thereby—if he has sinned and has realized his guilt and will restore what he took by robbery or what he got by oppression or the deposit that was committed to him or the lost thing that he foundor anything about which he has sworn falsely, he shall restore it in full and shall add a fifth to it, and give it to him to whom it belongs on the day he realizes his guilt.

You shall therefore keep my statutes and my rules; if a person does them, he shall live by them: I am the Lord.

And they were both righteous before God, walking blamelessly in all the commandments and statutes of the Lord.

They drive away the donkey of the fatherless; they take the widow’s ox for a pledge.

If ever you take your neighbor’s cloak in pledge, you shall return it to him before the sun goes down,for that is his only covering, and it is his cloak for his body; in what else shall he sleep? And if he cries to me, I will hear, for I am compassionate.

( There are those who snatch the fatherless child from the breast, and they take a pledge against the poor.)

For you have exacted pledges of your brothers for nothing and stripped the naked of their clothing.

But the children rebelled against me. They did not walk in my statutes and were not careful to obey my rules, by which, if a person does them, he shall live; they profaned my Sabbaths.“ Then I said I would pour out my wrath upon them and spend my anger against them in the wilderness.

“ Behold, I am coming soon, bringing my recompense with me, to repay each one for what he has done.I am the Alpha and the Omega, the first and the last, the beginning and the end.”Blessed are those who wash their robes, so that they may have the right to the tree of life and that they may enter the city by the gates.

I will never forget your precepts, for by them you have given me life.

“ Speak to the people of Israel, When a man or woman commits any of the sins that people commit by breaking faith with the Lord, and that person realizes his guilt,he shall confess his sin that he has committed. And he shall make full restitution for his wrong, adding a fifth to it and giving it to him to whom he did the wrong.But if the man has no next of kin to whom restitution may be made for the wrong, the restitution for wrong shall go to the Lord for the priest, in addition to the ram of atonement with which atonement is made for him.

Again, when a wicked person turns away from the wickedness he has committed and does what is just and right, he shall save his life.Because he considered and turned away from all the transgressions that he had committed, he shall surely live; he shall not die.

they lay themselves down beside every altar on garments taken in pledge, and in the house of their God they drink the wine of those who have been fined.

oppresses the poor and needy, commits robbery, does not restore the pledge, lifts up his eyes to the idols, commits abomination,

does not oppress anyone, exacts no pledge, commits no robbery, but gives his bread to the hungry and covers the naked with a garment,

“ No one shall take a mill or an upper millstone in pledge, for that would be taking a life in pledge.
